Breakfast on Pluto Release Date: November 18, 2005 Starring: Cillian Murphy, Liam Neeson, Stephen Rea, Brendan Gleeson, Gavin Friday Directed by: Neil Jordan PREMIERE.COM'S REVIEW (posted 11/18/05) After youbve made the film featuring the most famous thatbs-a-man-baby reveal in cinematic history, revisiting the transgender world will look to some cynics like a lazy bid for a notoriety/box office encore. Breakfast on Pluto, adapted by Crying Game director Neil Jordan from a 1998 novel by Patrick McCabe (whose The Butcher Boy Jordan filmed to great effect in b98) is not that thing. This exuberant, bounding, moving film is explicitly about its gender-bending characterbPatrick bKittenb Braden, played with unstoppable wit and feeling by Cillian Murphybin a way that Game was not about Dil. (And even more than Game, Pluto impeccably depicts the insouciance-as-defense-mechanism mode thatbs such a mainstay of drag existence.) Thatbs one thing. Another is Plutobs picaresque mode, its way of contrasting Kittenbs flamboyance with the dark times Ireland faced in the b70s while maintaining a Candide-like bounce in its storytelling. Jordan and McCabe draw up a wildly eclectic slate of characters and depict just about each and every one of them in the full messy flowering of their humanitybthat Jordanbs got actors like Liam Neeson, Ian Hart, Stephen Rea, and Brendan Gleeson on board doesnbt hurt. (Kudos are also due for Jordanbs casting of Bryan Ferry: a spectacular bit, and Ferrybs willingness to play up the nasty underside of his b70s lounge lizard persona.) Playful, poetic, shocking, saddening, and ultimately gratifyingly and honestly big-hearted, Pluto is an apotheosis of sorts for Jordan.b Glenn Kenny (http://www.premiere.com/article.asp?section_id=2&article_id=2412) ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jan 2006 09:05:54 EST From: LottieStreeter2@cs.com Subject: [AVALON] Vauxhalls----->Lions? (Actually it's the same song, to these ears, with annoying sound effects added.) Mr. Deagle is apt to get annoyed with self referential designers who take no account of the "public" who have to use their creations. Mr. Deagle who used-up perhaps 7-8 minutes of his valuable time, flipping thru screens of said website, was understandably in a fit of pique. Er... we also have Disney lions on Broadway, and some in Detroit, but I hear they are considerably less amusing. All that said... Mr. Deagle has sung the praises of his favourite new band, Louis XIV, on this site before. You pleasure starved Brits and Continentals can hear them live between now and February. A trip to their website( http://www.louisxiv.net), Infinitely more organized and accessible than the one that Vauxhall probably paid millions (pounds not $) for, will give those interested a glimpse into the design process for their first album's cover. What a fabulous band. 'Pledge Of Allegiance' (forthcoming single for UK) deserves to be more than huge, as does 'Paper Doll' which should follow shortly afterwards. I liked them first time I heard them, and since then discovered the Roxy and T.Rex influences that the Band have, be it in sound, images re Album / Single covers, or absolutely blatantly nicked lyrics. I guess it would have to fall into place for me then, yes ? Hoping they get the same sort of attention afforded to Blunt (yawn zzz) or the gut wrenchingly awful A & Johnsons (though yes, I know I'm well in the minority in that particular statement, but there you go) but I'm sure they won't. Talking of newies, Belle and Sebastian's next one is ok if a tad twee, and Graham Coxon's next one is ok too though I can't quite see all the fuss. As for Sparks next one, oh, yes, yes, yes. But I'm biased. Sorry to spout forth musically but I just had a large bundle of forthcoming stuff land on my desk today and trying to take it all in at once tonight is rather difficult, unless I had about 8 ears. I was briefly excited about receiving a new single with the fabulous title of 'Every Time a Teenager Plays Drum n' Bass A Rockstar Dies', but unfortunately it's crap. What a disappointment. There's a really nice thing by 'Soft Priest' which isn't out for a while, which sounds like Massive Attack having a fight. Ok, headphones back on. Back to your normal service. Reecey...
