The cognoscenti in Avalon will know it as appearing on the Japanese issue of Frantic but it appears to have done the rounds as a re-burn. What a joy. I always thought it was an Elvis cover but according to Jock O'B's elegant account on VivaRM it's a standard first penned in the 40s. It's hard for me to convey how much I love this song. Everything about it. The lyrics, the vocals, the twanging guitars, the locomotive rhythm section. But most of all I love its reverence for Sun-era Presley. Bryan's admiration of Elvis is well documented; up there with Garbo, Bogart and Monroe in the icon stakes for this sensitive County Durham teenager growing up in the '50s. His voice apes the King, yet the pained Ferryesque vibrato adds sensitivity and doubt to the swagger of the song's boastful sentiment. Imagine Elvis with self-doubt! My sweet spot. "You think she's yours to have and hold, someday you'll learn when her love grows cold. But I forgot more than you'll ever know about her." In many ways the attitude counterpoints the pathos of He'll Have To Go, another song set in post-cuckold despair, yet here the lyrics mock the new love. Hard not to drag up the Bry, Jerry, Mick triangle again, and I'd remind dissenters to that theory that Bryan would use that ancient experience much as a poet uses his muse. Happy New Year. Lets start talking again here... Here Come The Warm Jets Father, we've spent days on our knees Gone in a year, for we've no where to be Nowhere to be Nowhere to be Father stays, we're all on our knees Down on our words and we've nothing to be Nothing to be Nothing to be Father, down, we're all on our sails Hail to our keys, but we've nothing these days Nothing these days Nothing these days Father, give them straw men of faith We're down on our knees and we've nothing to say Nothing to say Nothing to say Dave N. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jan 2006 20:08:02 +0100 From: f2hb@wanadoo.nl Subject: Re: [AVALON] Here Come The Warm Jets A Google came up with this: http://music.hyperreal.org/artists/brian_eno/HCTWJlyrics.html Every song explained hope this helps, 2HB At 17:32 06-01-2006 +0000, rmfyp wrote: >I don't know if this has been requested here previously but does anybody know >the exact lyrics for the above? > >Thanks, > >Bryan ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V11 #4 *************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
