Running wild? I really can't picture it!); Cry Cry Cry (that 'naughty' little brass squiggle after 'Are you ready for hot stuff?' is particularly nasty); My Little Girl (would-be winsome, but it's just weak-tea a timewaster); and Dance Away (a cabaret cheese anthem...) Sonnet 18 (sounds like someone struggling to come up with a tune, and failing); In Your Mind (sounds like The Glitter Band trying to be deep); The Name of the Game and The Right Stuff (music from a bad place, to me the worst of the generally bad bunch that is Bjte Noire); and a special mention for Can't Let Go (one of Ferry's least appealing vocal melodies and a lyric full of clichid MOR bombast - 'There's a madness in my soul tonight'? Jesus wept....) Sympathy For The Devil (deeply unconvincing) You Are My Sunshine (abysmal - what was he thinking of?) Amazing Grace (has 'skip this track' written all over it) All Tomorrow's Parties (for an avowed fan of the Velvets to make this bland shagpile atrocity is hard to believe) That's How Strong My Love Is (the definition of 'strained') The Best: (too many to choose from, but...) ROXY - Ladytron; Chance Meeting; Beauty Queen; For Your Pleasure; The Thrill of it All FERRY - Another Time, Another Place; When She Walks In The Room; Boys and Girls; The Only Face; Chain Reaction FERRY COVERS - The 'In' Crowd; You Go To My Head; The Same Old Blues; Taxi; September Song ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Nov 2005 12:40:52 -0000 From: "Guy Lawley" Subject: RE: [AVALON] "Dance With Life" Single Well, Lottie, I have to disagree; I like all those old cover versions you mention, though You Are My Sunshine was never a favourite. Admittedly I haven't seen the movie. I'll try to check it out. I didn't mean to slag off Taupin in general. He has written some songs I quite like. Still think DWL is a stinker though! In fact the single contains three of Ferry's worst efforts all on one disc from hell; Help Me is pretty bloody awful and Is Your Love Strong Enough I have always disliked. Too bombastic. Listening to it after DWL though, I have to admit the instrumental opening of IYLSE has more sheer high quality in its first 15 seconds than the whole of DWL has! And he butchers "Piece of My Heart".... I mean luvya Bryan but.... In the case of this song, the movie "Phenomenon" was actually pretty cool, and this was the original song written for it. Bernie Taupin is a first-class lyricist, Ferry a first-class musician and vocalist. It's not a bad song. It isn't as 'deep' as a typical Ferry ballad but in the context of the movie, it works. I really like One Way Love. It is, as someone else has said, kitschy, and works for me as something like a throwback to These Foolish Things, though with a different production/sound. Very interesting to hear that about the video! Really sounds as if it and the song deserve each other. Guy - -----Original Message----- From: owner-avalon@smoe.org [mailto:owner-avalon@smoe.org] On Behalf Of KWil632057@aol.com Eh? No tracks mentioned so far rise to the Biblical travesty of One Way Love. Awful on every single level and then some. It also has a title that seems a bit kinky although I'm not sure why. The second side of the Manifesto album features the worst concentrated area of Ferry/Roxy songs. More Westlife than West side. The video for Dance With Lice showcases Bryan dancing with what appears to be a 12 year old girl and he would have won the Gary Glitter award for most inappropriate dance partner had anyone actually seen the video in question. If you ever get the chance to see it, I guarantee you will need at least six showers afterwards before feeling even remotely comfortable. As for the song, It's not bad as MOR pap goes but it's not as good as Help Me which is equally poor but at least has a witty title that references the film that it features in. I love Pyjamarama, though my spelchcker finds it tricky; Which Way To Turn I quite like and Name of the Game is OK. None of them in the same ball park of abject horror as Dance With Lice, IMHO. Yes, "lost his way" seems like an apt phrase. Guy - -----Original Message----- From: owner-avalon@smoe.org [mailto:owner-avalon@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Rob Whiteford Well its up against some serious competition for that award (Pyjamarama, Which way to turn, Name of the Game,) so no not quite in my view, although he had lost his way. Hey Rob, I just got the German Dance With Life single in the mail today (via eBay) and on the disc itself the credit reads "Brian Ferry." Scandalous! Both disc and back of sleeve list the song as Dance With You as well. Not only that, but, having never heard this piece of drivel before, I am moved to ask: is this Bernie Taupin song the single worst track Ferry has ever recorded? I tried very hard to like it at the time, but it wasn't really possible, and with hindsight one has to admit it's a stinker. Four Letter Love and True to Life are pretty indifferent. Midnight Hour I quite like; it's a strong song and not butchered by Roxy. I Don't Want To I like, in a similar way to One Way Love. Not quite as endearing perhaps. A couple of Roxy references. A brief clip of Phil singing the praises of inductees Pink Floyd and a clip of Ladytron was shown during tribute to John Peel who was also inducted as an honorary member. Interestingly the Eurhythmics were inducted and guess what - one Dave Stewart is on the Hall of Fame executive committee!!! Full list of inductees: Aretha Franklin Bob Dylan Jimi Hendrix The Who The Kinks Pink Floyd The Eurhythmics Ozzy Osbourne/Black Sabbath - inducted solo & as group Joy Division/New Order John Peel - honorary member Some great acts - and some more average! The good thing is that the public no longer get a chance to vote and it is down to a steering committee of rock stars, journalists, & generally people involved in the music biz. Dave Stewart is a huge Roxy fan - as is Annie Lennox. I believe there are plenty of Roxy fans littered throughout the music industry to get them a nomination. What with all the accolades from the likes of Franz Ferdinand & The Scissor Sisters. The killer touch would be a critically received comeback album - I believe that would guarantee induction within the next couple of years. However, I think they will have to contest with the likes of Kraftwerk & The Velvet Underground for a place. Any thoughts Alan ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Nov 2005 13:45:38 -0000 From: "Guy Lawley" Subject: RE: [AVALON] The Worst, and Best, of Bryan >>Stephen wrote: >>SPECIAL CATEGORY OF BADNESS - Dance With Life (it's not written by Ferry but it's not a cover either - so vile it deserves its own category - ------ Hey, don't hold back, Stephen. Tell us what you really think! :O) Heh heh! Since the current discussion kicked off with DWL I'm pleased we have come back to this point. Completely agree with you on that particular song, of course. And the single having Help me and Is Your Love Strong Enough on it as well... easily the worst coming together of any three Ferry tracks on one single I'd think; another special category award! Guy Lawley London England PS: I really like Sonnet 18, however. Tune/singing may not be the strongest but the vocal carries a certain conviction and the words are quite good; like Bernie Taupin, I gather this lyricist has a bit of a track record elsewhere...? ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Nov 2005 19:06:13 -0500 From: elvotix Subject: [AVALON] A perfumed Sigh DVD - US branch Thanks to Jane, I can offer this 1-disc DVD to the first 3 US-based members to contact me directly with home addresses.
