As a team they were genuinely more than the sum of the individuals, which, inviting trouble I know, is more than you can say for Ferry and the other members of Roxy. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Nov 2005 15:20:33 EST From: LeeSullivanart@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Roxy Magic back in the West Midlands We'll be Stranding Thursday 17th at the Rock Cafe 2000 in Stourbridge and at the Hiburnian in Stirchley on Friday 18th; then in Leabrooks, Derbyshire on the 25th. Hey Rob, I just got the German Dance With Life single in the mail today (via eBay) and on the disc itself the credit reads "Brian Ferry." Scandalous! Both disc and back of sleeve list the song as Dance With You as well. Not only that, but, having never heard this piece of drivel before, I am moved to ask: is this Bernie Taupin song the single worst track Ferry has ever recorded? Good quality on here - excellent - first in ages. Although clearly very biased I think you have to be a special sort of clown to spell Bryan Ferry as Brian Ferry. He's a national icon how can music journalists never have seen his name written down before. And Roxy Music were/are just Bryans best backing band, except for the ATGB ensemble. So new album - where is it? BF in Barbados at Christmas? It's not coming out is it? Don't agree about "I thought" - if it was an early Roxy track it would be hailed as a classic - and it is his best recent output IMHO. Two words... Warm Jets. This doesn't mean I'm taking the Brain One "side" of the "argument." Just love that album. Interesting how FYP is consolidating its position as the thinking fan's fave of Eno era Roxy (e.g. that Morrissey bloke and his witty comment when asked to list ten great British albums). I'm fickle. At the right time in the right mood I'll see the BBC sessions as the finest hour of the Roxy/Ferry axis. Next day I'll be listening to Avalon or Mamouna again and... well, you know. I will take the opportunity to thank this list for sending me back to Mamouna with fresh ears, BTW. In support of Martino's argument, while not actually changing sides... Tim de Lisle, in this morning's Guardian G2 supplement, lists the 89 albums you should own (if that unlikely figure was the total number you have in your collection). He includes both For Your Pleasure and Avalon, as well as These Foolish Things. Also, the Brian Eno produced Fear of Music by Talking Heads and U2's The Joshua Tree get a mention. AND Low by David Bowie. But no solo albums by ONE BRAIN. So Eno could be argued to have the greatest influence, while Ferry wins hands down on the banana star status? Best wishes Richard Mills n/p the news report that Madonna "played live" at Koko last night, performing just 5 songs. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Nov 2005 23:56:38 -0000 From: "Rob Whiteford" Subject: RE: [AVALON] The Curse of Brian / Worst track ever? I think maybe it was one of those albums that doesn't hit you over the head with standout tracks but it does have a certain depth to it. I think it would be great if it was mixed in 5.1. Unfortunately I think the sales were so poor, that it's unlikely to happen. Interesting experiment though if you've got time on your hands (yeah right); stick the disk in your DVD player and play it with the surround sound on, it does seem to separate out the intruments and have an interesting effect.
