Martin Stockman contacted me to discuss our options for converting the VHS release to DVD disc. We were driven by the number of enquiries on the list for extra copies of the tape recently and thought that we might be able to do something a bit more 'modern' and possibly universal. I have now created a DVD version from the VHS tape of "A Perfumed Sigh". Specifications and technical disclaimers:- 1. The entire tape contents have been compressed to fit on one single layer 4.7GB DVD-R disc - these discs are the most compatible DVD blanks on the market. 2. Most (note not all) domestic living room DVD players can play these discs (unlike the dual layer 8.5GB ones becoming available nowadays). 3. The disc has been created in PAL and with Region 0 - if your player cannot play PAL DVDs then, sorry, you'll have to make your own arrangements to turn it into NTSC. However, most (again not all) DVD players can easily cope with PAL disc playback. And most (nearly 100% this time) computer DVD players can cope. 4. The disc has been created with thumbnail menu selection for all the 'tracks' or clips that were on the tape - all 34 of them! So now the viewer can jump straight to the French soap opera clip for example. :-) The disc can also be played in it's entirety as one mammoth clip fest!! Nearly three hours of strange and rare celluloid experiences. Anyone curious about the precise content should email Martin (martinstockman@btinternet.com) with the subject line: "A Perfumed Sigh - DVD track list please" and he'll mail back the scan of the original case artwork. 5. Of course, MPEG2 video compression is 'bad' and VHS is not an ideal source material but it has to be remembered that the original VHS release was made up of clips from all manner of domestic video recordings that fans sent in to Martin. Those clips were then turned into DV by our tame editor of the time and compiled back onto a DV master (since lost in time) and then VHS copies were mass duplicated. So, my source material was not perfect (by a long way) but the results are definitely viewable and are, in many cases, totally unique records of performances you otherwise are very unlikely to see. 6. Lastly, and I really hope that you all abide by this, I don't want to see this appearing on eBay for money. This compilation was done by fans for fans and it annoys the bejesus out of me when I see some idle b*st*rd making huge profit out of our collective goodwill and effort. I will be checking for it and reporting any vendors to the eBay policemen. My thumbnail menus are unique and created by me so it will be easy to spot the copies of this original disc. Thank you for your patience....now, in time honoured Avalon tree stylee, I am looking for five volunteers to contact me off list at acooper63@gmail.com, and then to send me stamped self addressed DVD postal packaging to take one DVD-R disc copy each and make five further copies....to send out to 3 people with burners to repeat the process and two to other poor souls without the facility to make copies. I think that's how it works? Anyway, in this way as many list members and friends (and hopefully not ruthless, conscience free, eBayers) will get a copy this side of Christmas. Happy Birthday Bryan, keep up the good work! You are only 60 years young, or, as they say, "you are as old as the woman you feel" which in your case makes you twenty something again ;-);-) Yours Andy and Martin. P.S. If this works well then I am looking to do the same to Reecey's excellent compilations too, entitled "Penthouse Perfection..." and "A Rhapsody Divine..." Did Shakespeare coin the phrase "the world is my oyster"? A. Yes. The quote comes from Shakespeare's only comedy set in England, "The Merry Wives of Windsor": Why, then the world's mine oyster, Which I with sword will open. Please note that ARTE, the 'public' germano-french TV-channel, showed a few seconds of Bryan Ferry : his whistle solo of 'jealous guy', probably from the Grand Rex live DVD (if not, pretty similar !). It was the final generic of the "journal de la culture". Part 2 airs tomorrow & critics say this is better than the Last Waltz. It has quite an abundance of artists even Lead Belly doing Good Night Irene. Ferry did that song exactly like Lead Belly did it. The DVD is already in the stores & I bet this is one that Ferry will no doubt own.
