Antony won the Mercury! I've tried all the major book chains in London, and none of them have "Both End Burning" yet. On another matter: does anyone know if the clip of Roxy playing "Would You Believe?" live in 1972 (as seen on the Roxy/Ferry "Total Recall" video) comes from a longer film recording? Perhaps the entire gig? I've never seen a reference to this clip anywhere, and it would be great to know that someone somewhere has a whole 1972 concert on film! There are also clips of Roxy doing "A Song For Europe" and "Editions of You" in late 1973, seemingly both taken from the same concert. Again, does anyone know if the whole concert exists on film? And finally, as a long-time fan of Antony and the Johnsons, I wondered what the list thought of this (suddenly very well-known) artist. I first heard his song "Cripple and the Starfish" in 1999, just before his first album was released. It's an incredible song, lyrically, and of course I was amazed by his incredible voice, which immediately struck me as Ferry-esque; not just imitative, as so many New Romantics were, but expressive and agile, daring and beautifully controlled, just like Ferry's. Quite a few news reports have mentioned the similarity too - even, surreally, on the ITV early evening news. Has anyone here rushed out to buy "I Am A Bird Now"? ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Sep 2005 07:31:13 EDT From: JohnOBrien001@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Would You Believe? Antony won the Mercury! No but I will do. I'm very set in my old ways now but having watched the performance at the Mercury awards I thought he was superb. Quite reminded me of Ferry doing the only face on the ATGB tour. What a voice! Everyone spellbound by the beauty of it. It's good to see music like this getting exposure, especially for somebody like me who needs to be forced to listen to new artists. Bryan is getting quite a lot of praise from new bands these days. And his profile is still extraordinary considering the chart performances. Hope this new ROxy album is good - it seems to have gone rather quiet and they aren't touring at the moment. Word Magazine compares Goldfrapp to Roxy again this month and has an article on people who threw it all away with Ferry featured on the list! As Lou Reed and David Byrne are the mentors of each repectively, who would you have Roxy mentor? And that means play with, not just go to press saying "oh they sound a bit like we did years ago", or take them up just because their kids have recommended them. I would have thought Goldfrapp were a likely candidate, but not now. The commercialism of the new album is bound to elevate them beyond the mentoring stage into a different orbit now.
