This is like Close Encounters .. I got the West Coast thing , too.  Is it
the use of "movie show" , ..... alluding to an open air event, warm summer,
a  convertible with a old radio dial,  or the song ( album) itself suffused
with summer.. it came out in May that year , did it not, and the single a
couple of months later?

<Anybody have any thoughts re:  the Roxy song that is "hardest to  play" ?
Somebody told me once that Sentimental Fool is a hard one.   Thoughts?

Depends which part you're playing of which song - if Roxy Magic decided to  
play 'Manifesto' I'd have to have a very long lie down; the sax part is so  
tricky in its key changes that Mackay can be seen (the On the Road dvd) to  be 
using music notation attached to his (ahem!) lyre. I'd imagine that as a  band 
anything which had a difficult time signature would be hard to pull  together. 
'She Sells' might be one of those, but with TGPT underpinning it,  maybe not . 
. .
 
My memory of SF at Wembley 75 was of a wildly off-key Ferry singing himself  
onto the stage to a backdrop of a revolving, slowly focusing and wobbling  
Siren image. And it was sooo exciting! 
 
I love the Dortmund 'Flesh + Blood' for a similar reason; there's a  
fantastic dynamic in the live rendition with Ferry singing slightly flat,  Mackay 
playing low-to-high harmonics and Manzo playing the guitar part very  
aggressively. Goes to show that the last two should have been on  the record version :) 
 
Happy birthday this weekend to the Emperor Himself, BTW.

There are several ways to look at that question. What makes a song hard to  
play?
 

As Ferry usually writes on the piano he tends to write in flat keys (the  
black ones). This is not what a guitarist would prefer to play in. I noticed in  
an anorak muso way that Mick Green was playing all the songs in a different 
key  to the rest of the band. I asked him when I had the opportunity and he told 
me  he tuned his guitar a half tone out so he could play all Ferry's flat key 
songs  without the flats (I amazed there is anyone still reading this by now)
 
I recently had to learn Re-make/Re-model on the guitar and it was difficult  
to do not because of any complicated parts but the lack of a structure in the  
song and no defined chord changes or root on the bass. I would say Out Of The 
 Blue violin part is probably the one solo that requires a high level of  
musicianship. 
 
Being technically difficult alone in no way makes a piece of music  good. 
Some of the simplest things require great feeling and touch that makes the  music 
breath. Andy & Lucy's work on the 2001 tour version of Tara is a great  
example of this. To play the notes they play does not require a great deal of  
skill but the feeling and tone they get from those parts is where the beauty  
comes from.
 
I once spoke to Colin Good about Sunset about how he transcribed the piano  
part. There are parts of that song where the chord sequences are strange. He  
intimated that as Ferry is not a trained musician he tends to write things that 
 sound great rather than be led by some 'rules' learned at music collage. 
This  was one of the things he admired in Ferry's writing.  Paul McCartney once  
said about not being able to read music 'If you don't know the rules then you  
don't know you are breaking them'
 
Some songs would be harder to reproduce live due to the complexity and  multi 
layering of the recorded version. Same Old Scene springs to mind.
 
Some of Ferry's best work are simple 3 or 4 chord songs. Mother Of  Pearl, 
Casanova, Virginia Plain, More Than This, Boys And Girls (2 chords). This  just 
goes to prove that music doesn't have to be difficult to be good.

My wife auntie is a music teacher,
she  came all over from Ohio to play her violin at our wedding,
as the married people know, the husband can say nothing about the musical 
choice , poor guy..  :-))
so it was not a really roxy wedding but I had the chords of Out of the Blue 
at the rehearsals
and I asked her to play it.... She did it !!!!!  was quite Jobsonian  after 
all  :-)))))))))))

Eventually  no Out of the Blue at the wedding but at least I could hear it 
live  .-))))))))))
