Roxy Music's appearance at the 2005 Summer Pops was one such occasion. They were simply on fire last night. If you are lucky, you will experience a handful of concerts in which the performers on stage have the audience in the palm of their hand, and this was definitely one of those. They knew it, and we knew it. For anyone of a certain age, a Roxy Music concert is bound to be an instant nostalgia-fest. But, even after putting the rose-tinted spectacles to one side, last night they showed just why we still come back to see them after all these years. They have a fantastic collection of songs which have stood the test of time, and last night they were delivered with the kind of conviction that made them sound as fresh as when they were first heard. All the Roxy standards were there, of course - Street Life, Oh Yeah, Virginia Plain, Jealous Guy - but they were mixed with a selection of relatively obscure album tracks which only the diehard aficianado would appreciate, such as Prairie Rose and The Bogus Man. As you would expect, the standard of musicianship on display was superb throughout. The classic line-up of Bryan Ferry, Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay and Paul Thompson was augmented by an array of other musicians, including a violinist and percussionist. Needless to say, they made a big sound. For the first number, Bryan was hidden behind a keyboard on the extreme right of the stage, before he emerged to claim his rightful place at the centre. Roxy always combined the best of both glam and art-rock, and no show would be complete without two glamorous dancers appearing on stage to strut their stuff to Both Ends Burning, Love Is The Drug, and Do The Strand. In-between chat was kept to an absolute minimum, other than to introduce the members of the band. Sensibly, they let the music do the talking. It is difficult to put it into perspective in the immediate euphoria of writing this only an hour or so after they came off stage, but I have to say this must be one of the best gigs I've ever seen. Roxy Music last night showed they are among that very select group in the rock world that actually improve with age. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jul 2005 14:48:36 +0000 From: "Tracy Connell" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Liverpool :o They did Prairie Rose!! I also had reports from a non-Roxy fan who lives opposite the big top that it sounded pretty good. Funky touches to My Only Love and The Bogus Man (a great version, Ferry reaching high notes I thought I wouldn't hear from him anymore). Since PM and CS (not me) already do a major bulk of guitar work, he is free to eno about a bit here and there. The successful Olympic bid, and Crazy 07/07. Respect to Colleen for taking the political or Religous agenda off the list. If there ever was a week when we needed our spirits lifting it was this one, and a couple of days in Liverpool really did the trick. With tempretures of almost 30 degrees, we swealtered around the sites taking in all the Beatles nostalga. A visit to the Cavern club, what a surprise to see a poster of Paul McCartney playing there just a few years ago, with Mick Green on lead guitar. That was a surprise, and a night to remember for him no doubt. If you ever go to Liverpool, It is well worth getting on the Magical Mystery Tour, showing you all the Beatles homes, Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields etc. And so, to the big night, in the Big Tent, from the outside, it looked as if we were heading for the circus, but inside it did not dissapoint, the sound was great. As I met a few usual suspects in the VIP seating, it reminded me of that famous John Lennon Line, "Those of you in the cheap seats, clap your hands, Those of you in the posh seats, jangle your jewelrey" You know who you are! The setlist, as previously mentioned was the same as KoKo without Chance Meeting, but there was a lot more confidence and energy in the band. At Ko Ko, it appeared at times, that the show was the rehearsal, although I thoroughly enjoyed it. At Amsterdam, a much better crowd, roaring the Roxy chant with full ghusto, how many years has it been since we have heard that? but it did not earn another encore. Last night, The band could have blown the roof off the big top. Phil was amazing, and Andy who was a little stiff at Amsterdam, threw himself into the occassional pose. TGPT, was again on top form, which I guess is the inspiration for the rest of the band to follow suit. Ferry was really smiling alot, and really cheerful, and having bumped into his new girlfriend backstage, I can see why. she really was a lot of fun, as Duncan was taking my photo with Mr. F, she pretended to lift her top, and flash her boobs at him to make him laugh, well it certainly brought a smile to my face! My thanks go to Sue Siren, who volounteered, two backstage passes in my direction, one of which I passed to Duncan, so we both had the pleasure of mingling the band, outside, having photos, with all the band, who were very accomodating. As well as the band, Ottis was very polite, and Rhett Davies, who told me he is aware of the Avalon list, so I could not under any circumstances let the group know any detail I may of learnt about the new album. Especially....That the album is coming on really well, It sounds great! ...............We hope to get it complete for Xmas, ...............were having a bit of a break from the studio at the moment..................There will almost certainly be a tour to follow, or at the launch of the new album, .........and the best news of all.....SEVEN NEW SONGS. ...They sound great he said with a big smile. . The other songs we may have heard on some bootleg or other, giving no names. Sue, you are probably feeling pretty sick by now, so my sincere apologies, I don't think we have seen the last concert just yet, let's hope with some good management, they can launch a hugely succesful album, followed by a tour to surpass the 2001 Tour. If the album sells well, they might afford a new stage backdrop. Who knows next year might be their year for the Brits Lifetime Achievemnt award Regards, Mark Stephens ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jul 2005 16:55:27 EDT From: Jocelynfiske@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Liverpool - Top It's been a very long time, and probably not on English soil, that a Roxy/Ferry gig has left me speechless - and you know I speak metaphorically as it's nigh on impossible for me to keep my big trap shut. But Liverpool did just that. It was absobloominlootly amazing. As Mark said, it couldn't have come at a better time. I couldn't wait to get out of London after the horror of Thursday and head off on the road to a blazing weekend on the sunny Southport sands. So - good or bad gig, I'd already had what felt like a week's holiday in the sun. I arrived in The Pool with no expectation whatsoever, other than to meet a whole bunch of Scousers for the first time and feel like I'd known them for years after only 5 minutes. But this gig was something else. The band were cooking (and not just because it was well into the 90's in that oxygenless tent). Ferry did his little dance with the backing sisters not once, but twice and grinned like a fool. Andy let his mullet down and shook his little tartan ass for all it was worth. Phil reminded us how integral he is to the true Roxy sound (something we don't give him enough credit for) and Paul was breath taking. One of the highlights was the Bogus Man where Ferry "chuka'd" along to David Williams funky chops long after last orders. that brought the house down, as did Prairie Rose now full throated and full bodied. I never once wished a song away, or thought right we're on the home stretch now. I even enjoyed Jealous Guy - it belongs in Liverpool (and should stay there!) My little Jimmy Sommerville lookalike mate to my right introduced himself with " 'ey, I 'ope you're not goin' to sit down luv, we dance 'ere you know!". this was reiterated by the lass behind us and the two lovely wobbly Roxy girls in front. And we all went for it like maniacs. Great, great fun. Very late to bed, completely wired and up at the crack of sparrow's whatsit to jump on a train back to London in time to put in a feeble attempt at a day's work. All well worth it though. Great company as usual and fab to meet new faces Fran and Mrs Fran aka The Lerkers.
