I think most of the problem that many of these extremest groups have with the west is what they see as our interference in the Arab world. A lot of the issues they bring up have merit, but the way they call attention to their cause is deplorable. I'm sure they reassure themselves that many more innocent Arabs have been killed in what they undoubtedly see as a wave of western colonialism, but it doesn't change the fact that those poor people in London were just going through their morning commute. I know that terrorism is seen as the last option of the oppressed sometimes, but I really think it negates almost any possibility of gaining support for their grievances. Well, fanatacism is an illness that leads to sociopathic behaviour. The rights and wrongs of Western strategy towards despots is a hook that intellectuals hang their hats upon, but what we are witnessing here is bad, deluded people doing wicked things. More than this I know there's nothing. Trawling through the Sunday papers here what is so striking, and must be shared in this global forum, is the pictures and biogs of the murdered commuters. I'd say around 15% are actually English. At the page in front of me (page 3 of the S Times), the faces look out at me, the obituaries stating that I am seeing a Romanian dental technician, a Korean lady, an Israeli student, a Turkish medical scientific officer, an African hospital worker, a 28 year old English girl. And I'm thinking, yes, this is a typical group that one might have in one's tube compartment. What a city of diversity. With almost no racial or religious prejudice. So I get a little agitated when my dinner party guests start on about Arab payback for Western misdeeds, as they did last night at my home. Time to recognise evil for what it is. Just because he had the good luck (if you will) to be mayor during 9-11? Truly a grasping, mean-spirited, small-minded little man. ( at least he's ditched the comb-over.) Sorry, now back to a more on topic item!!! I wrote recently about my new "all region" DVD player, but the post seems not to have gone thru. Other Yanks on the list might like to know about it in light of the new PAL DVD tree. A friend who runs a Video store suggested the "cheapest model Radio Shack sells". Sure enough the $45 Aspire Digital model works just great with my Roxy Music - - ON The Road DVD in PAL format, bought online. You may have to call the 800 # to figure out how to set the region to 0, On The Road is Roxy circa the Manifesto tour, and has better than decent sound & visuals. Always loved that faux Albert Speer stage set & BF's red leather suit. Same, above mentioned Video-store-owning-friend, just sent me the ROXY MUSIC LIVE AT THE APOLLO DVD. (Reunion tour) I already own one. Any rabid Avalonian who NEEDS a copy is welcome to write me offlist, and offer some sort of trade. NTSC region DVD, as opposed to PAL, new, unopened.
