All of you in London are in our prayers Gerry York Tallahassee, Florida London Pride London Pride has been handed down to us. London Pride is a flower that's free. London Pride means our own dear town to us, And our pride it for ever will be. Woa, Liza, See the coster barrows, Vegetable marrows And the fruit piled high. Woa, Liza, Little London sparrows, Covent Garden Market where the costers cry. Cockney feet Mark the beat of history. Every street Pins a memory down. Nothing ever can quite replace The grace of London Town. There's a little city flower every spring unfailing Growing in the crevices by some London railing, Though it has a Latin name, in town and country-side We in England call it London Pride. London Pride has been handed down to us. London Pride is a flower that's free. London Pride means our own dear town to us, And our pride it for ever will be. Hey, lady, When the day is dawning See the policeman yawning On his lonely beat. Gay lady, Mayfair in the morning, Hear your footsteps echo in the empty street. Early rain And the pavement's glistening. All Park Lane In a shimmering gown. Nothing ever could break or harm The charm of London Town. In our city darkened now, street and square and crescent, We can feel our living past in our shadowed present, Ghosts beside our starlit Thames Who lived and loved and died Keep throughout the ages London Pride. London Pride has been handed down to us. London Pride is a flower that's free. London Pride means our own dear town to us, And our pride it for ever will be. Grey city Stubbornly implanted, Taken so for granted For a thousand years. Stay, city, Smokily enchanted, Cradle of our memories and hopes and fears. Every Blitz Your resistance Toughening, From the Ritz To the Anchor and Crown, Nothing ever could override The pride of London Town. - - Noel Coward Might make a good Roxy cover, come to think of it! ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Jul 2005 15:46:12 +0100 From: "Guy Lawley" Subject: RE: [AVALON] Checking in from London I said before: > It's no Sept 11th or even Madrid, but it's pretty devastating. In terms of impact, Colleen, the attacks clearly have their similarities. I was imprecise in my language; I meant simply in terms of scale. 9/11: 2,800+ deaths. Madrid March 04: 191 deaths. I meant, in case it's still not clear, that I am grateful the London attacks didn't claim as many lives. (Currently about 50 but the figure will rise.) Still a terrible, terrible thing. There will be a large number of appalling injuries as well, of course. Actually I think it's exactly like both of those situations. I know that when I called my best friend, who just returned from a weekend jaunt across the Pond in order to celebrate Independence Day (what can I say, we New Englanders, even those, like her, transplanted from tropical climes, are perverse), to make sure that her return date had been July 6 and was not July 7, we both immediately talked about our experiences on September 11, hers in NYC and mine in DC. It's a terrible thing and I can't see how anyone caught in any of those 4 cities on those days would not be now connected. I know a little of the strange mix of emotions of the aftermath. Thanks to everyone who wrote to me or to the list to check in and to share their stories. The only people that can nominate Bob Geldof are the Norweigan and Swedish members of parlament. I got my my friend who is a Swedish MP to nominate Chinese doctor Jiang Yanyong in 2004, but I doubt that he would nominate sir Bob. - -- Daniel ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Jul 2005 16:50:33 -0500 From: MarlanaK@webtv.net (M.M.K.) There is no need to shout Marlana. :-) Here's Jan Simonsen http://www.nndb.com/people/291/000028207/. He's an independent member of the parliament and a former member of the right-wing Progressive party. Being Swedish I can read Norweigian. and I found out that they actually changed the rules in 2003. Now more people can nominate, including your congressman, MP or whatever elected official in a national parlament et al you voted for. Here's to brush up on your language skills http://www.nobel.no/nor_kom_nom.html or in English http://www.nobel.no/index.html Some 166 people and institutions were nominated and unless U2 is booked to appear in Oslo on December 10 2006, this year's nominations ended on Feb 1, don't have much hope for sir Bob to get it. Since the Nobel family are distant relatives on my mother's side and I live some 30 kilometers from the place where the annestor was a minister, the original name Nobelius is a Latin form of the church's name, I am glad that I, unlike secretary of State Alexander Haig in 1981, found out that they hade changed the rules. - -- Daniel ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Jul 2005 19:26:00 -0400 From: Helen Thorpe Subject: [AVALON] Just a thought... Here in Australia, the Channel 9 network showed two specials of Live 8 material..the first, a two-hour special with McCartney, U2, Elton, Madonna, REM, Floyd. The second special - a three-hour extravaganza advertised as showing 'the most outstanding performances you didn't see the other night' - was shown Saturday night...watched the entire show, and not a skerrick of Roxy Music. Unbelievable that Dido, Black Eyed Peas, Brian Wilson, Green Day were considered better performances than Roxy. Absolute garbage! And in the second of the specials, we even got repeat performances from the two-hour special a few nights earlier. The 'host' of the specials, Richard Wilkins got his ugly mug on screen several times - 'look at me, look at me!' - chatting with Darren Hayes, Madonna and Mariah Carey. Love to know whether the record companies paid for the TV exposure... Scotty Tired of spam? Yahoo!
