I'm OK. I take the No. 15 bus to work which goes past Aldgate tube station. Luckily I am normally at the office by 08:45 so missed it on the way in. I decided to be prudent and walk to work today but I guess that won't last for long! Its like the '70s/'80's all over again. (Except that the IRA sometimes used to give a warning) Take care everyone. I hope that all Londoners (and visitors to London) from this list are OK Andy W. ___________________________________________________________ Book yourself something to look forward to in 2005. Actually I think it's exactly like both of those situations. I know that when I called my best friend, who just returned from a weekend jaunt across the Pond in order to celebrate Independence Day (what can I say, we New Englanders, even those, like her, transplanted from tropical climes, are perverse), to make sure that her return date had been July 6 and was not July 7, we both immediately talked about our experiences on September 11, hers in NYC and mine in DC. It's a terrible thing and I can't see how anyone caught in any of those 4 cities on those days would not be now connected. I know a little of the strange mix of emotions of the aftermath. Thanks to everyone who wrote to me or to the list to check in and to share their stories. Central London is strangely empty and subdued today. I'm right smack dab in the centre and I've never seen Oxford Street so quiet, not even when the IRA were operational.I spoke to a woman on my tain this morning whom I've seen and travelled in with for...oh, it must be about 20 years but we've never even acknowledged each other, let alone spoken, until now. We are being asked to continue being vigilant. MI5 suspect there may be further bombings in the next few weeks if they don't find the "cells" responsible - but then again MI5 had only just downgraded the threat of terrorist attack, so what do they know?! The message to all is, just be on your metal, report all bags not accompanied by an owner, lookout for each other and carry on with your lives - where ever you are. All this end thank you for your concern. The the tools of terrorism - bombings, indiscriminate killing - to achieve the terrorist's objectives of intimidation and total repression are very sobering to the non-terrorist. Airplanes flying overhead trigger unsettled thoughts of 9-11. For all the people who have been ruthlessly harmed over the years by those who hate anyone who is not 'of their kind', we are bound. Destruction brings no good to anyone. "Thanks to everyone who wrote to me or to the list to check in and to share their stories." Same here, and best wishes to all. The usual response from the "terrorized" is a steely resolve for revenge (rightly), and not a state of mind that is open to positive change. Let's hope smarter heads (I started to say cooler, but smarter, more resourceful action is what's truly needed) reside in London than among the cowboys of the Potomac. My heart goes out to those who did indeed lose friends, members and loved ones. Having stayed in London, and made "local" friends, yesterday was a pretty nerve-wracking day, wanting to hit my email and check and make sure all my friends and family were OK, and being stuck at work instead. If it is any balm to you... many of the people I came into contact with in the last two days, knowing I'm and ex-pat with friends "over home" asked me to extend prayers, sympathies and good wishes to any and all who were affected by the bombings. So, Jocelyn, Reecey, Guy, Bahi, Martin and Andy - and the rest of you who may be reading this later (or still lurking) - please accept the good wishes of a lot of Canadians from southern Ontario. And pass it on.
