The day after I was still very much in trance... I was fortunate to take a long stroll that morning with my almost 2-year old son through the flat green Dutch meadows around the Ouderkerkerplas. I needed the time to reflect on yesterdays events. And guess what? I found myself humming "One Way Love". The day before started with scanning some old vids that I've collected through the years. Most notably for me: the "I thought"-outro of Bryans last performance in the same HMH, from September 2002. The Brian Eno documentary "Imaginary Landscapes" and a collection of European television appearances, including an interview with Ivo Niehe... (Who the h*ll is Ivo Niehe!?) And a performance in a giant outdoors television set on a market square of some Spanish small town. With Our Man mimicking "One Way Love!" During the day some old and new Roxy friends gathered at my place, since I live quite near the venue. We got news from the front that the soundcheck would begin, and that maybe through open doors we would be able to listen in from a distance. I dont recall of actually hearing a soundcheck so off we went. "You may be stranded if you stick around, but that's really something." At 4 o'clock the bus with most of the musicians were already inside. We got rewarded with broad and friendly smiles by Phil and Andy who arrived together. Bryan came after 6, with most of us gone. But there was time for a picture and an autograph for those happy few that stuck around... I had at that time a quick check at home, wife and kids just can't do without me... ;-) Back at 6:35. Everyone still queuing outside. Entrance, wait, entrance again. Lost contact with the front... Always dangerous to be in the front line, but more exciting too of course! Stage rush (really!), I got just right to the middle, in front of Andy, about 7th row, 8 meters or so, people standing not to too closely packed. Friendly atmosphere, but I got protected well... It was bloody hot in the hal. Air-conditioning started really late. 7:30 Waiting for Roxy to come, there was a DJ... I must be too old for this. The first record he played was Bowies "Fame!", but the rest escaped me. I really dont see the 'special thing' to this. I think you can make without too much effort a much better act by playing a some mix of music the audience responses to. Don't we have video-screens to go with this!? After Bowie I didn't notice any interaction between 'the artist' and the hall... -Reecey: you can do better!- - --to be contd... - -- Fame, (fame) makes a man take things over Fame, (fame) lets him loose, hard to swallow Fame, (fame) puts you there where things are hollow ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Jul 2005 17:14:33 +0200 From: "A. van Lammeren" Subject: Re: [AVALON] HMH Then, at 8:40 or so: South Downs in the background and straight into RM/RM!, the first 'surprise', after VP being the opening for some shows now. Hope for Prairie Rose up; but no such luck. The set, only too well known, but we all know that by now. And I had a wonderful time! They should have put PR back in. Why keep the curtain with the fascist eagle from the 2001 tour and NOT keep de theatrical ending with FYP? And Why not throw one or two somgs from the new album at us? This shouldn't be too difficult to do in the coming gigs. The only down side that I'll be a Jealous Guy! The band did their thing, with Phil the most lively one. Though I should mention TGPT first, solid as a rock, again and again. Andy -Im still not really used to his stiff gestures-, but playing wonderful solos. And Bryan, working very hard, voice quite alright, but just not getting in it really. He apologized for his sore throat just before Strand "Sorry about the sore throat, but I caught it done to Berlin..." Two songs worked best for me: Both Ends Burning, with Bryan on harmonica, the band on fire and Phil and Chris battling each other with theirs guitars. And Bogus Man, with a very nice fade-ending. The 80 minute set was over before I knew it. I was really surprised later to find a source that had actually recorded the show, with equipment I didnt expect to give a listenable result. Not too clear, and lots of hiss, but nevertheless, if you have been there, a nice remembrance. Hear BEB at my web page. Then into the after-the-show-trance. So much fun to see so many people, only a quick hello though. And UK guests, most notably Reecey and John O'Brien. So sorry to miss Joep!, the two Franks, Michiel, Duncan and I surely forget others... There were 5.500 people... Hope you all are well and had a great time. I had to leave quite soon, so no time to say goodbye or wait for an autograph... Did anything happen in the night? All okay here. Some mild chaos at work (where emergency accommodation is being arranged for people who made it to work before the networks in London shut down but were never going to be able to make it back) but no one that I know of was hurt. The pictures and footage are shocking - all the more so for having occurred in places I'm so familiar with and pass through so often. I was mostly away from London during the IRA bombings of the previous few decades and haven't known an atmosphere in the capital as grim and sombre as it was this morning on the rail network and on the street. Though I so far haven't heard of anyone I know who was hurt, I was so upset and angry this morning and could see people around me feeling just the same. Once again, as is so often the case in these situations, there's a sense of community and solidarity that often isn't as visible as it was this afternoon - people are getting lifts (rides) home across London and down to the coast from colleagues that they would usually hardly speak to; they're car pooling, arranging to stay at friends' and colleagues' houses, covering for those who had to turn back and head home this morning, generally being nice to each other. All those who made it to work and who know that their friends and family are okay are experiencing such a sense of relief. Given what has happened around the world on and since 9/11, this could all have been much, much worse. I don't usually do mornings very well (as anyone who knows me will testify) so caused a bit of panic with the HR people at work, arriving so late (apparently they hadn't noticed my late arrivals so far - I can see some trouble ahead on that front :-) ) but today, even that ended up as another reason to laugh in relief.
