I love Jeremy C - he's wonderfully non-PC, yet his laddish nature disguises his intelligence and wit. Po-faced journos always have a dig at him but when you ask them if they've ever watched the ground-breaking and truly iconocalstic Top Gear they always reply in the negative. My pal who runs BBC Worldwide said that he Americans are crazily pitching for the show, and can't believe that the audacious stunts are allowed. (EG Playing conkers with caravans, racing a train to to the Alps, trying to "kill" a Toyota pick-up, inviting their Mums to review hatchbacks - it's the spirit of Burchill and Parsons at the NME! Gloriously eccentric.) So pleased the fool loves Ferry. However if he thinks that the crowd at Koko was well dressed then I despair.....frankly, apart from the divine Jocelyn and myself, it could have been any gig. So many stubby fingers clutching stubby fags, so few pleasantries exchanged, so many black t-shirts with tired slogans. Christ, I even saw tattoos. Quelle horreure. Aren't we all a bit old to be herded up against the stage? My shoes may never recover from the scuffing. Had a nice chat with Robert Elms and Gary Kemp as Pyjamarama struck up - smiles all round. I asked Gary if he thought that Spandau would have existed without the man onstage (crooning "Didn't sleep a wink last night"..) Elms roared. Kemp turned his back on me. When Ferry walks in the room, then you know why your Spandau says its late time to go.
