He's gone through phases where venues didn't know he was going to play there until the day of the show. Spontaneity and improvisation are essential parts of his aesthetic. With Ferry...not as much. ;-) On Jun 17, 2005, at 2:20 AM, Daniel Atterbom wrote: > Read it and weep, Ferry's idol Dylan has a new set list every day: > > http://bobdylan.com/live/spring2005setlists.html#20050525 > -- > > Daniel ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Jun 2005 03:16:11 -0700 (PDT) From: Joel Hurd Subject: Re: [AVALON] Roxy Music at LIVE8 in Berlin If you had to advise 4 songs to be played on the day, what would they be and in what order? It has some exquisitely gorgeous music on it - of course. So the months of waiting, while setback after setback seemed forever to be putting the eventual release into some doubt, were worthwhile. The original recording was way back in 2001 after all...and of course this new album is not on Burning Shed records where on might expect to find his output. But never mind... Love the sleeve notes by the man himself (or the Man's brother, depending on how you see things), so I'm going to go to the trouble of copy typing. "The music you hear on this disc was recorded late at night in an empty Norman cathedral. This was for quite practical reasons, very little traffic noise and no sounds from an audience/listeners; an extraordinary side benefit of recording at such an hour in such a building was the complete loss of the modern world and total immersion into another atmosphere. This undoubtedly accounts for the musical content. I deliberately stripped the pieces down to their bare bones allowing notes to hang in the dark corners of the building, attempting to allow the lines and harmonies to become as though part of the structure itself. Listening back to the recordings in the cold grey of an East Anglian afternoon I'm pleased to say that the material travels well, both in time and space, these are humble sonic decorations that contain elements of their place of gestation. I hope they put you in a place you like being, somewhere other than the everyday world, a place of stillness and quietude, a half glimpsed retreat, a place of peace." Please note CD2 is an enhanced CD. It has 10 audio tracks. Tracks 1-6 are in binaural - headphone surround sound stereo. Track 7 is a binaural track to warn that white noise will commence on track 8 unless you have a DTS decoder. Tracks 8-10 on CD2 are DTS Surround Sound encoded and will play as white noise hiss on a normal CD player. A DTS decoder/surround amplifier will decode the white noise into 5:1 surround sound. How cool is that? I don't even understand that last paragraph! And its technological bent is so at odds with the "place of stillness and quietude" away from the "modern world" (in more ways than one) that once again Roger seems to be a true Eno. Which is OK because he is. best wishes Richard Mills PS In case you need to know, my copy came (finally) from HMV.co.uk ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Jun 2005 11:51:02 -0400 From: "Pete Seely" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Brian Eno's brother Roger Thanks for that review, Richard. Marking the 10th anniversary of Alanis Morissette's critically-acclaimed "Jagged Little Pill," the Gramm Award-winning artist will pair again with the original album's producer and co-composer, Glen Ballard, to record an acoustic version of the album in its entirety. Politics aside, I'd like to hear Over You, though I know Ferry doesn't really do that voice these days. Very good to have you back on the list, Mr Stockman. I'm not sure about the heroism or the sons but I'd enthusiastically second your recent suggestion for a Kraftwerk-style Ferry, with Thornton, Williams and Hubbard. They could do a killer version of The Death of Me and the original super-funky N.Y.C. from Horoscope: mostly TR-808 but a guest appearance from Maceo Parker wouldn't go amiss. He could fill in for David Sanborn on Windswept.
