'Surreal' doesn't really do it justice as a description - 'unlicensed busking' is probably closer. Looking forward to the Koko; the whole of Roxy Magic will be there too, so if there are any no-shows . . . LOL Very nice of Roxy to do a warm up for our 'Bristol/Birmingham Axis Tour' on the following 3 nights! I've taken over duties on our website and there's a complete redesign to take a look at if you're interested, plus a download of our promo track complete with 'Radio Fab FM'-style voice-over. Thanks as ever for your indulgence, Lee S _www.roxymagic.com_ (http://www.roxymagic.com) ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 May 2005 08:12:00 EDT From: JohnOBrien001@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Life Begins At 40 To follow on from Lee's post What a 'Wild Weekend' that was one that I will never forget and made special by all those who travelled far and wide. A special thanks to John Dillon who came all the way from Florida. The mountain came to Mohamed this weekend. After meeting so many Roxy fans in various places around the world it was great have them all on my doorstep. Many friends and family from my home home 200 miles away and many from my adopted home here in The Highlands it was just surreal to see them all together. A nice touch from Paul Thompson came with a birthday wish by text during the party. In my need for a drummer, Paul was willing to play drums at the party too only his schedule at the time wouldn't allow it. I managed to get some of the guys from Roxy Magic and with myself on guitar and a local friend on drums with only a one hour run through earlier in the afternoon it was 'tonight Mathew I am going to be Phil Manzanera'. All those years with a tennis racket in front of the mirror wasn't wasted after all. Complete with Targett McAdams Tartan kilt all I needed was bug eyes and it would have been complete. Top marks to my wife who had arranged with Mr Ferry himself something special for me. He sent up a one off Gold disc he had recieved in Australia in 1975 and signed the back of it to me. I used to tell my mother when I was 12 as I stood at the mirror with the tennis racket that I would be on Top Of The Pops and have a Gold Disc some day so I can now say I have achieved that. Just when the weekend couldn't have got anymore surreal about 15 of us headed off to Loch Ness and down to the castle. With no sign of the monster Lee Sullivan attempted to charm him out of the water with a rendition of Tara in one of those mad moments you treasure for ever. It as great having you all, you know who you are and that was what it was all about for me a chance in a lifetime to play host in my home town for my friends and family. Ferry has to re think the lyrics of Same Old Scene because frindships and the memories that go with that lasts forever. Does anyone have an explanation for this seeming contradiction? Well I think Costello must mean that he acknowledges Roxy`s influence over the years through other artists but not necessarily himself, and certainly not in Costello`s music. Costello has always been a social "rebel", very political at times, whereas Ferry is the extreme opposite and nowhere in Costello`s works that I`ve ever heard reflects any influence from Ferry/Roxy whatsoever. How could one ever begin to reconcile songs as diverse as "Watching The Detectives" and "Virginia Plain" released around the same time in the `70`s or "Avalon" and "Shipbuilding" from the `80`s for instance? I think they are two very distinctive, stylish but very seperate artists. If Costello really does mean that Roxy were of any influence on him it must be somewhere else, but personally I cannot see it in any other area either. But "Detectives" was released in 77, wasn't it, to appear in 1978 on "This Year's Model"? So VP was already about five years old. Apart from that, I agree... > I think they are two very distinctive, stylish but very seperate artists. He has collaborated with Eno on one track, however. The only thing Ferry and EC have in common: a very strange vibrato in their voice - which I like, personally.
