My, that Mr Ferry's imagery is far-reaching, and no mistake. And Marie Antoinette said "Let them eat cake..." (or was that Rousseau?) and all sorts of shenanigans ensued. I've always seen "Laissez faire le Strand" as a double pun. It could be taken as meaning, "Let them do the Strand." Does Dr Puxley's analysis concur on this point? We're incognito down the Lido The Venetians wore (wear) masks for carnival, which renders them incognito, or unknown. I always think of the Venetian Carnivale visually as an eighteenth century thang, all Caneletto/Casanova, tricorne hats and domino masks. It was the only time of year that all classes could mingle freely, because their identities were disguised. The Lido is one of the Islands of Venice, famous as a beach resort for the Beau Monde. I.E. Von Ashenbach succumbs in one of the grand hotels there, in Death In Venice, while mooning over his golden boy Tadzio. Diaghilev would take his troupe, Including Nijinsky, there to winter. (I suppose It's a good thing Mr. Ferry sings about Nijinsky, instead of his (also a dancer) sister, as Strandskia might prove a mouthfull.) Cinemas around the world are named Lido, also a famous Parisian night club, a'la Moulin Rouge, but I digress. Irma was the main character (a big hearted prostitute) in a very popular musical-comedy in Paris in the mid 50's called Irma La Douce. Many songs are still well known by old french people. Their eyes sparkle when they listen to the hits like "Irma La Douce" or "Ah Dis-donc, dis-donc, t'as vu la gueule qu'elle a". Actually, on stuff like "Sign of the Times" and "In Your Mind" i though Ferry was being overtly Dylan-esque. It's just that he sticks to the same themes so consistently and we can usually tell what he's going for, so that when he's esoteric it makes all the more mysterious. Like "The Chosen One", what the hell is that about? I have a rather pedestrian question, is buying the "Thrill of It All" box set the only way to get those B-Sides on CD these days? It actually pains me a great deal that I've never heard Sultanesque. Are all those B-Sides instrumentals? And how do you people enjoy the B-Sides, I mean, do you view them as non-essential bonus stuff? __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Take Yahoo! Mail with you! Way back when, 'The Numberer', 'Pride and the Pain', 'Hula Kula' and 'Application' were significant extras for me; as well as being used as pre-gig music. But even with the box set, Numberer is wrongly mastered (only one of the stereo channels across both) and South Downs is mastered backwards - though it took a while to notice :). I like the b-sides, but buying the whole box for them, hum.. I'd better put them on and find out. Sultanesque is another divider among Roxy/Ferry fans. I like it, my wife absolutly hates it, her Ferry taste runs more like Colleen's and KBP's actually.
