Quaglino's 16 Bury Street, SW1Y 6AJ Tel 020 7930 6767 After an illustrious past spanning four decades from 1929 through to the mid 1960s, Quaglino's was spectacularly re-launched by Terence Conran on Valentine's Day 1993. After eleven years the restaurant and bar remain as glamorous and popular as ever. This glittering restaurant and bar was built on the site of the old Quaglino's, the most famous and decadent of London's 'society restaurants'. Sweeping staircases, sexy cigarette girls and imaginative seafood highlight the commitment to glamour in this place to see and be seen. and, I'm sure someone will tell me if I'm wrong: Mabel's Tavern 9 Mabledon Place WC1H 9AZ King's Cross A rather average pub which could be so much better. The range of beers has improved since the recent takeover, but the rest of the pub has remained much the same. The food is fairly average and therefore rather expensive. This pub has no real atmosphere and can get crowded at lunchtimes but it's not a bad place to get a decent drink. Regards. It basically means to use the best bone china, the stuff with the gold/gilt edge. Trouble is, it has two meanings? A bit of snobbery to impress or intimidate poorer people that you invite for tea. Or You could also host (or be invited to) 'a gold number' to show acceptance or equality between family, friends and neighbours. Which is what I think the song lines were getting at? We're incognito down the Lido The Venetians wore (wear) masks for carnival, which renders them incognito, or unknown. I always think of the Venetian Carnivale visually as an eighteenth century thang, all Caneletto/Casanova, tricorne hats and domino masks. It was the only time of year that all classes could mingle freely, because their identities were disguised. The Lido is one of the Islands of Venice, famous as a beach resort for the Beau Monde. I.E. Von Ashenbach succumbs in one of the grand hotels there, in Death In Venice, while mooning over his golden boy Tadzio. Diaghilev would take his troupe, Including Nijinsky, there to winter. (I suppose It's a good thing Mr. Ferry sings about Nijinsky, instead of his (also a dancer) sister, as Strandskia might prove a mouthfull.) Cinemas around the world are named Lido, also a famous Parisian night club, a'la Moulin Rouge, but I digress.
