Don't think I'll be going, think I'll wait until they do their own full concert instead of a festival. I think some of us who didn't get to any gigs last time because of cancellations should get first refusal on any Roxy concert tickets though!! Anyway, I'm too busy going to Go West, Elvis and G4 concerts! lol! I know - I'm sad! :) Hope you have a great time though! Took an early start and an overnight stay in the very rural setting of Keresley (the aroma as one walked past cow fields en route to the venue from the hotel, you would not believe!) in order to catch my first dose of the Magic. I don't think Roxy tunes have been aired anywhere quite this rural since Ferry ventured Anglia way for all those rucking farmers (no Spoonerism intended). The show was excellent, incredibly good fun. And BEFORE you think Lee has paid me to write this (frankly the offer was derisory), I have a few negatives as well as huge positives. So read on... Venue was ideal from my point of view and it was great seeing the members of R Magic taking part in pre-gig libations with us mortals. Two sets of over 10 songs must be very thirsty work. Like any tribute band - and no, I've not seen that many because, let's face it, a band worthy of tribute is few and far between - there is a world of difference between them and the original. But the biggest difference is the lack of appearance or, particularly intended similarity. I found this quite refreshing in a way - the spirit of the original performers is there, but the tribute bringers still have their own performance style. Even the rather workmanlike Ferry doppelganger (who, let's face it, does manage to have something of Ferry about him in his tuxedo and black leather trousers) is not devoid of his own personality. Rather liked what felt like chronological order singles playlisting, but was disturbed by Lee's uncharacteristic hiding himself away in the mix. Empassioned-looking sax solos were inaudible, while the keyboards (excellently played for the most part) were too dominant. After about four songs, egged on by a rather demonstrative member of the audience, I dared venture forth and complain about the sound. The sax was finally loud enough by about half-way through the second set. The singles give way - and I think they need to - more recent material and more obscure tracks soon enough. And I think the material works very well as a live set - Roxy Primus take note! At times, the music is uncannily similar to the originals; at others, the inventiveness of the band can't quite match the lack of same equipment or the original players. I took my nine-year-old son who was transfixed throughout. I also took my 18-year-old nephew who had not heard any of the material before until the final closing LST. His one observation was that he didn't think the band needed a female tambourine-playing backing vocalist, but this was said prior to the song Avalon. The woman has pipes! For me, Remake/Remodel was the most fantastic cover of the night. Not sure what Roxy have planned for Isle of Wight, but I defy Mackay and co to make a bigger impression on my son (and nephew, for that matter) than Roxy Magic achieved with the solos in this number. And I'll take money from whoever wishes to bet me otherwise! An excellent, excellent evening! And A+ to the band - splendid chaps, all of them! It, imho, depends if the title is another expression for transition or not. - -- Daniel, I have howling dogs, and you don't ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Apr 2005 19:29:01 +0200 From: Daniel Atterbom Subject: [AVALON] Doxy Music Ain't it clever?
