"Had a bummer of a day (ain't it always like that when you've special plans) and was 5 secs away from bowing out... but boy, am I glad I didn't!!! Peoples, those guys not only rock(sy), they're living proof that one does not need an army of people to recreate the sound we all love, whether it's early or latter Roxy you're into. 'Avalon' and co worked just as well (if not better) with seven than it does with eleven ( I actually found myself thoroughly enjoying the songs I normally skip). The likes of 'Virginia Plain', 'Remake/Remodel, 'Do The Strand' sounded like they were originally intended - raw and basic. The place was by no means packed, but no one stood still during any number, whether it was 'Slave To Love' or 'Ladytron'. It made something else come to my attention - Magic put an intense passion into their gig; the lack of which, IMO, can pull the original down at times. It also made me wonder if Roxy Music could still cope with playing 'unaided' like that. Kevin Hackett pulls off a more than worthy BF. I had a quick chat with him at the bar during the interval and suddenly had the weirdest notion... 'Hell, girl, this is the closest you'll ever be to Bryan Ferry...' - says it all, I think. John filled PM's shoes perfectly. The rythm section fitted to a T, the keyboards did the necessary squeaks, squawks and squiggles as well as the more melodious parts. Last, but by no means least there's Lee Sullivan. I closed my eyes during 'Tara' especially and saw AM... pure bliss and what a tribute to the saxmeister he is - keep up the good work! Quite frankly (and I'll probably get shot for this ), the guys could do with watching Magic... they'd learn a thing or two they've probably forgotten! To round this off: I've always regretted not seeing Roxy live during the early 70's - but tonight, I did. Thanks for that ultimate treat, guys, and for a 'Magic' evening. I'll wear my Roxy Magic badge with pride ROLL ON STRATFORD!!! P.S. Camera was present, both still and video, so watch this space, peeps!" I'm not going to add to it, except to say that it would be good to see more true Roxy fans giving this tribute band the benefit of the doubt and going along to judge for yourselves. It was good to meet Terry Lane and Chris Cassidy again (TAKE NOTE Mark Stephens and Stevesiren - would be good to see you at the next Midlands one!), and to meet Richard Mills finally. Thanks Lee and the rest of the Magic guys for a Really Really Good Time.
