Nowadays it might sound a little too slick, but at the time Godley & Creme were experimenting with Gizmo. Manzo was possibly at the height of his powers. Great music for the regular touring that was happening at the time. It's one of those albums that once started you just have to let it run through to the end, the production is excellent and the running order has a really good balance to it. I know that everybody will have their own views on particular albums, but I have to say it's worth spending the money on. A couple more questions if anyone has the time: Has anyone listened to Listen Now lately? Did it "age" well? Is it still timely to listen to it today as 801 Live obviously is? I take my music purchases fairly seriously but none as serious as my RM-related purchases. THANKS!! They both appear to be Approaching Taidu. Unless it's one of those very clever Eno-esque things where the music is produced by Brian pre-setting parameters and, on these two occasions, the same factors came into play. So does this mean that either track is still "unreleased"? Does anyone know? (This doesn't mean I didn't play it a lot when it came out.) Having heard & loved 901 LIVE, which I consider the best live album ever, and greatly enjoying DIAMOND HEAD, I found LN to be far too slick. That seems to have been a 70s thang, of over producing. If AVALON has been dismissed as (by one reviewer) "elevator smooch music" then what could one say about LN? The greatness of 901 live is the fact that it is live, obviously well rehearsed and played on a really good night where the band was having a really good time. The much commented on "studio as musical instrument" seems to have homogenized LN far too much for my tastes. This was to be Phil's big anti-fascist, anti-big brother statement, and it felt more like the Muzak it should have rebelled against. It would be interesting to hear a bit from fellow Avalonian, Mr MacCormick, about this album. Yes 801 Live is one of the greatest live albums ever by an assembly at the top of their live performances, in Eno's case his last for over a decade. I like Listen Now, but maybe it's nostalgia for surving a year of US WASP suburbia. - -- Daniel ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Mar 2005 16:03:56 -0500 From: bphilipson@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Listening now to Listen Now I listen to it quite frequently. I don't know if it is more timely than 801 Live, but I find it at least equally enjoyable. Keep in mind that I feel that I am a Manzanera fan more than a Ferry fan. I would also highly recommend Vozero and 6pm. - -----Original Message----- From: Helene Cc: avalon@smoe.org Sent: Fri, 25 Mar 2005 07:12:48 -0800 Subject: Re: [AVALON] Listening now to Listen Now Thanks for all of your replies so far --- the consensus appears to be (so far) that it was timely at it's release both socially and personally (70's) and that it was great -- everyone seems to have reserved judgment due to the era the album was released in though.
