I am re-reading one of my favourite books Playing for Keeps, Michael Jordan and the world he made by Pulitzerprize winner David Halberstam. After the first championships with the Bulls, after the Dream Team in Barcelona everybody, but some old friends were excluded from Jordan's life, since everybody wanted a piece of him. He stayed in hotel and locker rooms or sheltered resorts. One person became close to Jordan in this late stage of his career: coach Phil Jackson. The reason was that Jackson never asked Jordan for anything, no signed sneaker, no high-school rally apperance, nothing. Jordan was humbled by his baseball adventure and he became another person in his last three last championship seasons. I was never into Jordan nor NBA when he was active, but I read the book since I like Halberstam's books. - -- Daniel ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Mar 2005 09:23:47 -0000 From: "Terry Lane" Subject: RE: [AVALON] Is Bryan Rude ? Just say thanks to him in a polite way, and you may be rewarded with an extra smile. I believe he is polite and appreciates people behaving in the same way. He certainly prefers distance to fans etc, e.g. quick autogrammes from concert hall to limo.. but he has accepted gestures from a friend of mine who is severly handicapped, and he did'nt quince when he shook my mates arm stump..I'm sure he has an off day, which we all do.. rudeness is not part of his personality file. if he re-writes the dreadful cry, cry, cry to I'm rude, I'm rude, I'm rude for the new album, then forget what I think. Paula, the listmistress of the Swedish list I referred to earlier, lived in London for a number of years due to her husband's work. Being Swedish she also worked and they hade their kids at a private school, also attended by if memory serves correctly Ms Hall and mr Jagger's offspring. I have her permission to recap this: Now Paula is by no means a Bryan Ferry fan but she has attended parties with him in Twickenham a number of times. They have mutual friends, one of her London friends is an old schoolmate of Mr Ferry's. Paula found Mr Ferry very nice. "Funny, talkative, generous in his storytelling." She had him seated next to her at formal dinners a few times, "first time I did not know who he was. :-) That probably helps, at another time, a fan came to the party and Ferry left rather quickly." Paula notes that Mr Ferry always came on foot to Twickenham, maybe he took the train to Richmond and walked, but Mr Ferry was always picked up. She has also seen Keith Richards biking from the grocery store with a pint of milk in the basket, but that's another story. - -- Daniel ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Mar 2005 10:12:23 EST From: KWil632057@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Is Bryan rude? I agree. I met him in Newcastle outside the City Hall and he sat on the tour bus signing autographs. I asked him if he could put 'To Tracy' - and he did, and then shook my hand. But the best moment was in Glasgow at the SECC when about 5 of us were waiting outside the back door and bryan was driven out. He slowed the car down to shake hands with us. Now, me being a bit shorted than many others gets shoved out of the way most of the time, but Bryan saw me and reached passed the others to shake my hand - so sweet of him! Also, in Middlesbrough I was taking a little video clip of him at the concert singing 'Slave To Love', when he saw me he came over my side of the stage and look directly into my camera. I gave him a big smile and he actually smiled back at me. That was an excellent gig btw! Great audience, apart from one annoying woman behind me with a bunch of flowers shouting 'Bryan, Bryan I love you' and trying to get him to take the flowers! lol!
