A new Roxy album , circa 2001/02 would have disappointed everyone on this list who thought they could re-create 1973 or 1982. , ( Beauty Queen II anyone, pass it on)..... Ferry's limited output in later years has served to remind me how he matured as an artist. The list has long debated Ferry's last wholly self-composed piece, Mamouna, to great detail. Could we say its his swansong as he later turned to more cover versions? Having lost confidence in his ability to sell new stuff ( we know there is a couple of unreleased masterpieces around in the Ferry cannon,) after Bete Noire and Mamouna fared so poorly, I agree that Ferry seems to have taken to the Greatest Hits mentality recently. ( That tour 2003). give him his due, maybe he is still working on his masterpiece> For me, I'm happy with what i've had these past three decades. Jethro Tull disc, "A", which comes coupled with the DVD "Slipstream". For those who don't remember, Eddie Jobson was a "special guest" on this Tull album and subsequent tour. I haven't listened to this version of the cd yet since I've listened to the original release quite a bit and there are no bonus cuts but I've always liked it, especially since Eddie is prominently displayed on both keyboards and violin. Well, folks, Eddie is all over "Slipstream" as well. I'd say he easily vies with Ian Anderson for the most screen time. As on the album, he adds a very smooth electronic sheen to the Tull compositions and his contributions to some Tull classics are highly worthy. Most of the DVD is concert footage but there are a few concept videos. We have to remember that this is an 80's production so some of the concepts and special effects seem cheesy today but, all in all, highly worth buying. And the Lucite violin makes an appearance. I still read my Avalon mail to keep current with what's going on (which, unfortunately, is nothing for a long, long time). OT, if I may - I want to say that I chuckled silently when I watched a news report about the end of foxhunting in Great Britain. A big sigh to the Ferry boys. I have had a number of days to think about this and came up with a bit of an idea as to why there is no "legacy" behind the legacy. The root of specific types of music indicate where the music came from and, ironically, where it's going. If pop bands such as FF and SS state that Roxy was an influence, it's not stating what type of music directly the influence came from. It's not as easy to see. For example, "Steely Dan is to Horace Silver" as ABC / Duran Duran is to Roxy Music, nor does it suffice to say that there is an example to say that "Roxy Music is to _________." It can't happen. What was Roxy's influences?? Campy music, artsy music, standards, and "stuff" that can't really be described or (thankfully!) pigeon-holed into a certain genre. If all they had done were standards, then standards would still be the main ingredient to find elsewhere. If their music was only to be categorized as "glam", then that would be easy to locate in future (today) bands as well. I guess what I'm trying to say in a roundabout way is that there is no way there can be a legacy, when the music Roxy Music created was out there, brand new, certainly nothing that was copied, or can be. And personally, that's how I like it. Unique, albeit alone. I'm very protective of my Roxy Music also :-) Just my thoughts..... back to lurkdom....
