Subject: [AVALON] 801 Line Up Can anyone confirm the 801 band line up that played Glasgow late 1977 and is there any listing of all venues played during that tour? Can't recall if it was Glasgow or Strathclyde University but I do recall rumours at the time of an appearance by Eno. I was there and I can't even remember, too much cheap Uni beer! I'm glad you dared to say 'downbeat mood', Christian! The first time I listened to Mamouna I felt plunged into an extremely saddened mode. I became very much worried for Mr. Ferry, then, for the first time I sensed his profound sadness and, dare I say, his personal pain. In my mind, that is a Hallmark of Great Art - the ability to impact and connect with the emotional side of the consumer of said art. "Walk on ice, feel your fingers burn... And the world you know is easing out of time." It's fabulous. Best wishes. Some info at http://www.btinternet.com/~stephen.yarwood/ainley.htm http://moo.vivaroxymusic.com/1427 gives you the line-up for the Manchester live album and I think your guest is Andy MacKay Saxophone playing with Phil Manzanera Guitar, Paul Thompson Drums, David Skinner Keyboards, Simon Ainley Lead Vocals And Guitar and Avalon member Bill MacCormick Bass. - -- Daniel not in Glasgow ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Feb 2005 10:37:19 -0500 From: KB Porter Subject: Re: [AVALON] Roxy's legacy ? Bravo, Johnny! I think you've nailed the issue very squarely. Although I came to Roxy Music via Bryan Ferry solo work, I have cultivated a deep affection for RM's work - just wonders about what they had struck upon and then whittled away. As Pete used to write at the end of his posts, 'Running out of time', Bryan Ferry's years are dwindling rapidly. A 'new, all original album' must come very soon to ensure an enduring legacy. Paul Thompson is vital to the Roxy Music sound - indeed, I think Ferry would do well to retain Mr. Thompson's talent as long as possible. I've never understood why PT wasn't considered a founding member - wasn't he there from the get go? He seems a very modest and patient man, which is why he was the only performer from the Roxy Music 2001 tour that I cared to meet because I wanted to let him know what a superb contributor to RM he was. Astonishingly, Mr. Thompson's drumming seems to be unaffected by age - he is as good as ever - same as it ever was. Best wishes. Like those of us who've been around a while & don't visit as often (seemed like old times). As the saying kind of "pump up the volume".----When one listens to " Mamouna" you either like or hate it. When I first heard it I thought, " Ferry has finally let his guard down & didn't care that this was a moody dark artful piece of work." Who knows at that time what struggles in his life was going on. I personally think that it was his best & probably will not be anything else original. For me its the closest thing he ever came up with to demonstrate his artful side with music. I even loved the horse as the cover. Again that dark side that he was conveying. Also this is one that is a slow danceable kind of music that oneself can get lost in.--We all need to be lost sometime.
