Have a re-listen to the Phil Manzanera~Bryan Ferry interview at BBC2 from June 20th, 2003. There is some laughing there. OK, Phil is doing most of it, but I think it's Bryan laughing too... Should have cut it at 29 seconds, but couldn't resist to include the airplane near-crash story... Sorry. Hear it at: http://www.avl.dds.nl/BBC2_030620_BFPM_laughs.mp3 For some, perhaps more easily downloadable via: http://www.avl.dds.nl/laughs.htm Thanks to Colette Robertson for the picture. Unfortunately a big dog ran off with the certificate of authenticity that came with them, but there are some clues to their provenance. Firstly, in the top pocket is a 'To Do' note which reads: 1. Form astoundingly innovative band 2. Conquer musical world 3. Undermine reputation with a succession of overproduced albums. 4. Buy stamps The label reads M & S, which stands for Manzanera and saxophone. Now, I didn't believe this at first, but then a bloke in the pub said he'd seen it on the Internet, so now I'm totally convinced. There is also a receipt from top Wolverhampton auction house 'Flangebrackets'. Finally, I asked Phil Manzanera and he said it was true. He said Ferry wore them at a private gig in Shepherds Bush only last year. Chris Bid high and I'll throw in the actual pencil that inspired 2HB, although after all these years that may be pointless... ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2005 14:13:24 EST From: DEAGLERR@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Pyjamarama - the pyjamas - for sale In a message dated 1/11/05 8:04:35 AM, roxyrama@yahoo.co.uk writes: > Watch eBay over the next few days for I'll be selling the actual pyjamas > that inspired the song > Pyjamarama. > Quite funny, Chris. When can we expect Casanova's coke spoon? RE: Virginia Plain, the drawing, not bad at all. First the photo is of really poor quality, badly lit, and the paper wrinkled either from the paint, or from the poor frame job. Second is this the ACTUAL painting, or a sketch for it? I got the idea the painting was a landscape, instead of the shallow pop space that we see here. The Image seems to synthesize the influences of several British pop artists. (big surprise) The figure is reminiscent of Richard Hamilton (naturally), in that the figure is partly seen,, partly obscure. (see for example Her's Is A Lush Situation) The Cigarette package is reminiscent of, among others, David Hockney's Typho Tea. The block with the lettering is similar to Hockney, or more likely Derrick Boshier's work. All in all not bad for a bright art student in the late 60s/early 70s. Firstly, I'm sure I've seen it somewhere before, but for the life of me I can't remember where. Secondly, I remember Jim Lawn writing on BF's own forum something along the lines of 'If I had a pound for every time I've been offered the 'original' VP, I'd be a rich man'. (Now he's happy to be offered a pound for each Big Issue...) Most telling of all though are the things that were written when VP was released: "Surprisingly, the idea for the single, "Virginia Plain," dates back to 1964 which was Bryan's first year at Newcastle University studying art. He did a painting, still in existence somewhere, of a girl with flowing, wavy hair on a vast cigarette packet with a dream plain background so that the title could have referred to all three subjects." Caroline Boucher, Disc Magazine, 16th September 1972 "The song's based on a painting of the same title which Ferry did in 1964: a monumental packet of cigarettes with a picture of Jane Holzer on the front, standing on a plain ... so the cigarettes are Virginia Plain, and the girl is Virginia Plain, and the plain is a small patch of brown liquid which might be creosote or an extract used in industrial processing. No! The plain is Virginia Plain too. And it's, as they say, a surefire hit." Ian MacDonald, NME, August 12th 1972 Neither of those descriptions fit this piece. Oh, and the signature doesn't look right to me either. There's a black-and-white photo of the Virginia Plain painting in Roxy's Autumn 1975 Siren Tour programme. From comparing the image in the programme and the ebay photo, they look identical, so I think it's the real deal. Dave N. (ebay again) They ARE similar, but the background is painted differently on the block so that it seems to read, VIRGIN PLAIN (in a black & white photo red reads as black.) Also, wasn't there something about this being on the wall at E.G. Management's office? Maybe in that cringe worthy Australian interview about a year back? One of you will remember the woman who claimed to be the source of Street Life's "pick up the phone, no one's there" bit The signature? Surely it is not the grand scribble most of us have on prized momentos, signed by the chosen one, over the years. Might it be a Ferry signature circa 1964 before he was living so large? So... it is either another version BY Mr. Ferry, or it is a really close copy, by someone who knows the Ferry piece intimately. Personally from only access to bad photos I'd go with this being a sketch Ferry gave away, while he kept the final painting for himself.
