Does anybody have any evidence that Bryan Ferry, off the rails rock star and former innovator has laughed since the late 1970's ? I only ask because (in the manner of Steve Martin) he used to be so funny with his funny expressions and silly way. He made us all laugh (or at least smile inwardly and knowingly while contemplating the inner psychologial workings of mans upward path to the aristocracy) throughout the early stages of his career and he laughed with us. The trouble is though, Bryan does not seem to have laughed in a very, very long time. He certainly hasn't made us laugh (I exclude the photo of himon the beach with Katie Turner in this as we certainly weren't laughing with him. ) The odd and borderline tragedy of this is that he has plenty to laugh at. A girlfriend who is clearly has great talent and as an added bonus is young enough to be his girlfriend. He has a son who keeps his dad in the news (providing an excellent springboard to release an lp of new compositions). He's on the regular playlist at the Queen Vic pub, surely the most popular boozer in the land (Keith Chegwin notwithstanding)? He has even survived a potentially crippling aeroplane accident yet why can't he turn that frown to a smile? I have an answer which is my New Years resoulution. My friends I call upon you to tickle Bryan. Don't hold back, storm the stages (I suspect he will be on tour again this year), corner him backstage and let rip with your feather dusters and nimble fingers. Go in two's and hold him down. On his feet or under his sure-to-be-sweat-free arms, get in there. Cries of 'tickle ickle wickle' should alert others in the area that the target has been sighted and now is the time to make the 'Cool Ruler' laugh until he wets his expensive Gucci Leather trousers. Nope. But you've got to remember that 'downcast' and 'mysterious' facial expressions help a musical artist to be considered as serious and worthwhile. > I only ask because (in the manner of Steve Martin) he used to be so > funny with his funny expressions and silly way. I've said it before on this list, and I'll say it again: Bryan's stage performance from the Musikladen TV show are hilarious (in a very good way). His facial expressions are hugely entertaining, especially on "Psalm". Brilliant - smiles are infectious, you know. And it certainly added to the performance then. 8-D See!! > The trouble is though, Bryan does not seem to have laughed in a > very, very long time. He certainly hasn't made us laugh. Forgive me for writing out of the blue on this subject, but I know you will have seen the disastrous consequences of the earthquake and resulting tidal wave on Boxing Day. I know many of you will have already chosen to donate money to various appeals to raise funds for the ongoing work to relieve the after effects, providing food, water and medical supplies to the millions left to deal with the aftermath. If you have not yet given OR if you feel you would like to make a further donation, I have arranged at my work for a corporate sponsor to match any donation made by January 21 2005. So, for example, if you give five pounds, another #5 will be donated to match your contribution and the Gift Aid Tax advantage will be used to provide an additional 28p per each pound at no further cost to yourself. You can send me your donation by Paypal, cash, UK cheque, postal orders or wire transfer. Send cash or UK cheque/postal orders (made out to Richard Mills) to: 47 Dunstable Rd, Caddington, Bedfordshire, LU1 4AL. Or you could send a Paypal payment. If you choose to do so, please send Paypal payment to this e-mail address (chandla911@aol.com). For details of sending a wire transfer payment, please e-mail me. All money raised will go to the DEC appeal. Member agencies include Oxfam, British Red Cross, Tearfund, Save The Children, Help The Aged, Christian Aid, Tearfund, Concern and others. Please think about giving something, no matter how little, and remember that our total raised will be doubled by the generous contribution of my sponsor. If you have a moment's hesitation in trusting me with your donation, please know there are other ways of sending a donation but these will not be match-funded. UK residents can call 0870 6060 900 to make a donation by phone to the DEC Tsunami Appeal. If readers have access to the Internet, they can make a secure donation at the following website: _http://www.dec.org.uk/_ (http://www.dec.org.uk/) Ensure whenever you're donating, if you're a taxpayer you tick the 'gift-aid' box - so the charity can claim back your tax at no cost to yourself. The money raised worldwide already has been tremendous, but the longterm problems have not been solved and they won't go away. The member agencies of DEC will use all the money raised to help the people in the region affected to piece together their lives and move forward in the years to come. Please give generously and happy New Year! Some vaguely untopical things, presented in my usual rambling fashion. * Someone called Sara Furrer has covered Slave to Love. Her song is on various iTunes Music Stores. It's MOR to my ears but she certainly has a good voice and, interestingly, doesn't change the lyric. ("To need a woman"...) For those using the UK store: Everyone else will have to search because I'm too lazy to muck about and find the right URLs. (Tracks cost 79p/99c US/99Eurocent, etc., etc. Preview available.) Also available: a few good dub covers of J Blackfoot's Taxi, though none beats his own "Taxi 95" recording. * * The Blue Nile's High, which appeared on JO'B's and Reecey's 2004 lists: what a grower that one was. I got it the day it was released and was disappointed. The same happened with Peace at Last but while that one remains a mystery (save for the odd track or two, like Tomorrow Morning, which is dazzling and brilliant), this one began to work its magic a month or two after its release. Their first two albums are still my favourites. * Todd Haynes' film of Karen Carpenter's life, called Superstar and featuring original Carpenters music (and withdrawn at Richard Carpenter's insistence, ostensibly because permission hadn't been obtained to use the music) is a treat. It manages to be serious, moving and (believe it or not) played entirely by Mattel product, namely: Barbie, quite appropriately. You must see the film. (The Roxy link is that Mr Haynes shot Velvet Goldmine, which ended up featuring lots of Ferry's songs, after more music related problems with Bowie.) Buy a DVD-R, watch it online, or download slowly. http://illegal-art.org/video/dvd.html http://illegal-art.org/video/index.html#superstar * Other stuff that I played over and over and over during 2004 but which was released previously: Mamouna (how can anyone not get this? You ARE playing it at maximum volume, I hope, and not treating it as some kind of wine-bar collection), Hiroshima (ditto), bits of the Alphaville album, early Roxy, Lee Perry, Augustus Pablo, Snoop, Lewis Taylor (Stoned pt I in particular), Ferry's I Put a Spell on You (Extended Single version, played at dangerous and possibly illegally high volume), Etienne De Crecy's Super Discount (still sounding good after 7 years), The Future Sound of Jazz vol II (ditto), lots of Neil Young, Dre (2001), lots of the excellent David Holmes (with and without the Free Association), The Girl Can't Help It (Little Richard), Around the World in a Day (currently my favourite Prince album), Tweet's Southern Hummingbird, Eno's Compact Forest Proposal, Cale, lots of Leonard Cohen, bits of Sly Stone. Best wishes for 2005. Thank you to all the posters who make this place interesting and to our uncharacteristically quiet list-owner for all her behind-the-scenes admin work. :) B PS. This account is spam ridden and non-list e-mail is usually trashed automatically so please include the word Avalon in the subject if want to reply off-list and have no other e-mail address for me. Hats was so good but I felt as though I had died (and not in a good way) when I heard Peace at Last. Glad to see someone else feels the same way I do about that album..... Bahi, what's the other album besides Hats that you were speaking of? Finally purchased 6PM and have only listened to it once, but I really like it so far.... will post more thoughts after another closer listen. Buchanan was so self-deprecating about the songs and his playing I felt almost embarrassed to enjoy them. Bannister was once the hatchet man who will live in eternal glory for removing DLT, Simon Bates, et al from Radio One, and has quite a good late-night talk show. One evening, on a show on the subject of getting something for nothing, he told an anecdote about how he blagged a trip with the BBC to see the infamous Roxy/KC gig at the Frejus amphitheatre.
