I don't know how many of you are familiar with The Mighty Boosh (made up 
mainly of Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt). Like most of the great later day cult 
comedy classics, they started at The Fringe and then developed as a Radio 
Series. They've recently had a TV series on BBC3 now moved to BBC2 (so they're 
probably tipped to be the next Little Britain).
Well, it's hard to describe what they're about other than two zoo keepers at 
Zoo-Niverse, yet both are obsessed with being something else. Vince (Noel 
Fielding) is convinced that The Human League invented music and never shuts up 
about Gary Numan, he even forms his own electro band called Kraftwerk Orange. 
Howard (Julian Barratt) thinks he is a jazz trumpeter (but only when he is 
possessed of the spirit of jazz) and is an aficionado of slap bass.
In one particularly surreal episode Vince is recanting his dream of being 
found lost in a forest by Bryan Ferry who has raised all the animals as his own - 
he is King of the Forest but speaks like Tarzan. Later, whilst transporting 
Ivan the killer bear to an Animal Offenders Institute the duo are waylaid in a 
haunted forest by The Hitcher (with uncanny overtones of Papa Lazarou from The 
League of Gentlemen) - they are saved by...yes you've guessed it, Bryan Ferry 
in white tux, bow tie, false Vic Reeves type chin and blue face paint - the 
King of the Forest who wasn't a dream after all, but fact.
Perhaps this accounts for Ferry having to cancel his forest dates at such 
short notice as he "had his children of the forest to save".
But then again, maybe I'd finished off the cooking sherry and imagined it 
all. Better wait for the DVD.

In 1975 the childrens show "Crackajack!" (pause.....) used to end with a  
pantomime type sketch using current hit singles sung by the cast.
This particular week Don Maclean (the comic, not the singer) & Peter  Glaze 
were doing "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" during which they sang "Love  is the 
Drug" using the lyrics "T'aint no big thing to wait for the bell to ring"  with 
hilarious consequences.....
 
I was always dissapointed that when they did a similar skit based in doll  
shop they didn't use "In Every Dreamhome."

In Barry Cryer's memoirs he talks about directing Ferry when he was on the  
Kenny Everett show. Ferry didn't get what he was being asked to do until Cryer  
directed him to act 'Languid' 
Ferry replied 'Ah, languid. The key word.'

Also tangentially on the subject of Roxy and comedy, if you were watching BBC2 tonight, you might
have seen Round The Horne - Revisited, which was a recreation of Kenneth Horne's 1960s radio show
which starred Kenneth Williams amongst others. The film was a version of the stage play which has
been running in the West End and nationally for some time. 

Playing the part of Horne was Jonathan Rigby, who is currently writing Both Ends Burning, a book
about Roxy expected to appear sometime later this year.
