I understand ALL are Roxy fans. Hope to see some of you there. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Dec 2004 18:31:56 -0500 From: KB Porter Subject: [AVALON] Most Listened To. Odds and ends. "It would be interesting to know if people would have considered Horoscope and Alphaville letdowns. I somehow doubt it." Rob Now that an unofficially released album has been brought into this discussion, I willing submit my 'most played track' - "Love War" from Alphaville! (All "IZ'ed out, back again, LW was the first Music I heard in 17 days.) The shrill thrills and bomb chills of it all: LW's emoting emergency, angst, and conflict superbly intensifies with the presence of slightly muted sirens, synthetic screeching banshees, and terse taunting 'na-na-na's nagging throughout. These wonderful sounds not only create and enhance atmosphere but they surround the listener with more than adequate stimuli to envision the scene at play (think, 'reality music' in the fashion of 'reality tv'). I get chills and thrills, too, from this atmosphere contrasted with, and complimented by, the 'calmer' musical interlude accompanying the lyrics "Like flowers in the rain... You really hurt my pride." which smoothly flows through an ethereal personal hell of resignation. The galloping "Win or lose..." segment immediately throws one deeper into this inferno that endlessly loops between petulant love, passionate hate and fury of unchecked, smoldering war. Mr. Ferry's voice drips with intonation and emotion - the sounds of reality and fate neatly slip through the closing noose. The total package is brilliant and should be honored with an Emmy, and would be if I had my way! A while ago, John O'Brien wrote about interesting/best bass lines in RM/BF material. I thought about Love War (LW) - it has to have some of the most lively bass since Kiss And Tell - - have we any base players here who appreciate the dexterity, strength, and stamina required to reproduce LW's varied bass? Complements to Simon, your IYM post has given me some new 'global' insight to think about. You remain not only the fountain of 'reality youth' but also that of knowledge and intellect. Happy Birthday, Richard! Are you a 'christmas baby' or a 'new year's folly'? The latter, I hope. BTW, you are not alone at Checkpoint Charlie. Nigil, you wrote that "Taxi" was bitterly disappointing. I'm so sad to hear this as I believe "Taxi" is one of the all-time best covers album by any artist. And "Mamouna"? - I'm in Daniel's court here - it is an under-rated masterpiece. Unfortunately it has received significant ridicule because some prefer 'raw and edgy' to 'perfectly composed' music - isn't that personal preference, not a measure of 'good or better'? With "Mamouna", I find every sound relevant to the song it is in, there is no gratuitous 'noise' therein! Interesting how we interpret the same material differently. Also, from Philip: "I think we all forget that Ferry matured with age as an artist. I am glad every album is different..." Hear, Here! Finally, here is 'to commerce and consumerism, family and holiday gatherings, to old ends and new prospects of a better year ahead'!!! Come what may - don't worry about a t'ing. Best wishes always, KBP ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Dec 2004 01:10:26 +0100 From: Daniel Atterbom Subject: Re: [AVALON] Most Listened To.
