That was later in the day, tho. Just curious as I watched him sing with two mics to his face. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Dec 2004 17:43:04 +0100 From: "Han Snijders" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: Ferry/Live Aid it was a very hot day: one is a mic the other a cornetto. It has always struck me as being obviously soul influenced. The brass section is so The Memphis Horns and the whole set-up was very Stax road-show influenced (although I would guess they never got the hang of the dancing - Ferry being much more Boris Karloff than Sam and Dave in that department). But just listening to some funky duets at the moment and up pops a tune I haven't heard for yonks. "To know you is to love you" by Stevie Wonder and Syreeta (it was on her 1972 album). The orchestration at the end could have come directly from IYM. Looking at the sleeve notes I see it's accredited to Julian Gaillard. Does anyone know if there is any connection with him and Anne Odell? It's far too close to be a coincidence. The clipped guitar work of Howard "Buzzy" Feiten wouldn't be out of place on IYM either. I think someone also mentioned that Ferry's vocals were too strangulated. Well you can't get much more strangulated than ITIS and that was always a plus in my book. Maybe he was delivered of the spirit of Otis Redding in the studio and that was as Stax a delivery as he could manage. Now meanwhile back at James Brown and Bobby Byrd.... I also notice that Roxy Music will be some of those showcased on BBC 4's Peel tribute tonight ( 11.10pm UK). Philip young Otis made an good account of himself in the Paxman interview last night.
