Like few/many others I am not found of the last 3 Roxy's LPs : Manifesto, Avalon, Flesh and Blood. Even if few songs are quite good. The songs are not efficient enough to hook me at first hearing and not "rich" enough to convince me after several attempts. Many songs take too long to really begin. I am waiting for music and I feel like hearing someone saying "Hold on the song is in progress". The reason Why : I read several posts about "Early Roxy" versus "Second Period". Or With Eno or Jobson and whitout. In my opinion the main difference among Roxy/Ferry works is : piano ! In the first four albums, piano is omnipresent, omnipotent, very often the main instrument in every songs (except those signed Manzanera or Mackay). That is a determining factor. When you use a piano (I guess some of us are musician) you immediatly decide on harmony, rhythm, and melody. Or at least two things among these three. You can not use a piano in an other way. So you get a very structured music. "Editions of you" is a good exemple. Everything is said in the piano introduction. The whole song is decided in the first measures. Please listen Roxy/Ferry from time to time from this point of you. I have never read about, but I beleive Ferry wrote these first period songs in front of a piano and then gave it to the band or to a professionnal arranger (or both) to enhance. Later, because inspiration went away, or fashion, or marketing decisions to find a new audience, or will to do something different and original, it has been decided to change the recipe. They locked up the band on a studio and they learn to use rhythm boxes. Of course Ferry's voice save the whole thing. Would you listen to Avalon if it was sung by someone else but Ferry? I confuse songs on Manifesto with ones on Flesh & Blood, much to my boyfriend's chagrin -- he loves F&B, evidently from good memories he had in the summer of '80. Musically speaking, IMHO, the songs just aren't as good on either of those three albums. Besides that, the reason I listen to RM is because of the irony in their lyrics, i.e., MOP and any song on FYP. Your question is a good one: I have listened to Simple Minds cover For Your Pleasure and it was stellar both on its own and as a reminder to me of how good the original was, but I had no interest whatsoever in 10,000 Maniacs cover of Avalon. Hiroshima & Love Me Madley are 2 must have songs. Did they not do More then this? Or have I missed something? I never liked Ferry's In your mind or The bride stripped bare. Siren is probably my least fav Roxy album, I guess I don't like the late 70's that much ... - -- Daniel ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Nov 2004 16:48:07 -0800 From: Helene Subject: Re: [AVALON] least played cd Oops! You're right, More than This was covered by N. Merchant and 10,000 maniacs. Is the Neon Lights album by Simple Minds common knowledge?? Wonderful album!!
