The curly-haired star - who last had a top 10 hit in 1982 - is emigrating to Australia where he still has a loyal fanbase. Sayer, 57, says record bosses are more interested in signing X-Factor contestants and copycat boy bands than real talent. "I would love the record industry to be more receptive to my music but all they are interested in is style over content," he said. "Because I don't go to showbiz parties, I don't have the right image. The media decides who's in and who's out. But my early records are as popular as they've ever been. "I'm not uncool - I went to a boxing match the other day and the crowd were chanting my name so I know they like me. "It's a shame because people would love to hear something new from Leo Sayer." He added: "The music industry here is full of cynicism and it disturbs me. "Nobody wants to stand up and take a risk. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who don't like Robbie Williams but he is presented to the public in such a way that they have no choice." Sayer had a string of hits in the Seventies including You Make Me Feel Like Dancing and When I Need You. He supported Roxy Music on tour in the late seventies. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Nov 2004 15:55:04 EST From: KWil632057@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Ferry and Religion: Triptych I'd be interested in any discussion on this song in particular and Ferry's religious beliefs... Roxy never seemed to me to be a band with Religion high on the agenda so Triptych seems a very weird piece to include on the Country Life lp, especially given the infamous cover art..... Was he doing 'a Bush' and using Religion as a way to break into the US market? Any takers? J Triptych Lyrics to the song Triptych as recorded by Roxy Music. (Ferry) Here the soil is barren Here nothing grows But crosses They know not what they do You, your forgiveness Falls as dew Nailed upon a wooden frame Twisted yet unbroken Open mouthed a silent choir Understood, unspoken Never was there heard a sound Until the heavens opened Now the tide is turning To other worldly yearning Though the sun's eclipse seems final Surely he will rise again from _www.vivaroxymusic.com _ (http://www.vivaroxymusic.com) ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Nov 2004 09:12:40 +0100 (MET) From: Heather Marie Buch Subject: Re: [AVALON] Ferry and Religion: Triptych I always thought of "Triptych" as more of a tribute to the arts, especially renaissance art. The subject matter of the song always just made sense to me knowing that Ferry was an art student and a social climber in England. To me, "triptych" refers to the old master three-part altarpieces which were painted so frequently by the likes of Rogier Van der Weyden or Robert Campin (nice image here: http://www.metmuseum.org/explore/Vaneyck/van_eyck10.htm) or everyone's favorite weird triptych, The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymous Bosch http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/bosch/delight/. I know there were a lot of triptychs made in the Netherlands in the 15th century. They were also made in Italy (but I've always paid more attention to the Northern art). So I never really equated the song with relgion at all.
