Bryan Ferry has this tum-diddley tum-diddley rhythm in his voice as he delivers what is in effect a really sad song. Not quite how Paul McC did it. Also that line about how she leaves home when she's been living alone for so many years! BF had the right amount of world weariness for it. I never understood at the time why the All That And World War II project wasn't more successful. I know Rod Stewart's Get Back was successful as a single (I think) and was EWF's Got To Get You Into My Life on it also? But it's BF's contribution that sticks in my memory. That and the pic of the various artists that were printed on the poster inside the 12-inch album version. Is there a copy of the pic of Bryan Ferry from that poster online anywhere? While I still have the album and the poster in storage up in the attic, I would love to hear other people's views about the arrangements, seeing as how Lou Reizner pretty well dominated that area of work. Such a shame he died so soon after, but what a legacy! But BF has a good track record for the one-off contribution to other people's projects. If only he could oversee a 10-song contribution to a new solo/Roxy album. It's got to be 'Lover'. Maybe they thought it wouldn't quite fit on F + B, though I wish they had thought otherwise - had it been there, it would have been the Album highlight for me. Love the middle piece with the almost out of tune keyboards - adds that element of weirdness to what seems to begin as an ordinary love song. Funnily enough, it still sounds rather unfinished, but maybe that's part of its charm. The backwards South Downs suddenly has a charisma all of its own now for me too, due wholly to the Reunion tour, of course. Still love the older 'live' For Your Pleasure, cruelly hidden away on the B side of BEB. As for the recent SOTW, 'Boys And Girls', it's my equal fave BF song, along with Windswept. I loved the B & G on the recent never ending tour, it being the highlight of the evening for me. I'd put good money on it being earmarked for another Roxy Album, had Avalon not been the end of the road a couple of years earlier. I loved the occasional extended versions of B & G that Ferry occasionally decided to do on that tour, though I know it irritated the hell out of a lot of other people ! It's got Roxy written all over it (as has Windswept). The big disappointment though for me was when B & G ended, on tour - at that moment, in a way, the gig was kind of 'over', as it marked the beginning of hitsville. That's what happens when you attend too many gigs - the 'hits' become a bit of a trial after a while (though not for 99% of the audience, as that's what they've come to see). Oh, for the luxury of being able to choose my own setlist. A lottery win then booking a private gig is clearly the way to go.
