Psalm, Triptych (and Amazing Grace, later on) seem odd in the Ferry cannon. The idea of the roue manque (this list will strip out the accents) we all know and love singing hymns has always seemed perverse to me. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - -------------------------------------------- But you said it yourself, Ferry is complex and unique. Part of him is spiritual, he has said in a traditional Anglican sense. He can't write about things he feels deeply or emotionally about without touching on this aspect. Many of the blues greats he was influenced by crossed over into Gospel at times... and Elvis Presley recorded at least one entire gospel album, so our Bry is in good company. I agree with all your comments on Flesh and Blood, I have always enjoyed this album. You know what else I enjoy....(ducking!).....Bryan's "cover versions" of ReMake/ReModel, 2HB, Sea Breezes, and Chance Meeting on "Let's Stick Together". Although when that album came out, it surely was disappointing to see these on the track listing instead of new material. But I like what he did with them "5 years on". 2HB is such a beautiful song. And I love Thom Yorke of Radiohead's version on the Velvet Goldmine soundtrack.....if I wanted to expose a new person to Roxy Music, I think I would pick this song first. What song would you pick? ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Sep 2004 12:13:51 +0100 From: "Cassidy, Chris J (RES)" Subject: [AVALON] Psalm You are joking of course? Apparently so. I think the studio version is merely 'good'. But the Musikladen performance turns a good song into something amazingly great. On that Musikladen show, Ferry really got the intonation 100% correct, and with a lot of energy to boot. Also, and I've said this before, Fez's facial expressions on that show during that song bring a ruddy huge smile to my face. He's was so damn entertaining! :o) _______________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Booze is the drug, eh? Reminds me of that great Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band song, Give Booze A Chance (I have it on the BBC sessions collection). Next thing, we'll be combing BF's songs for references to fags (cigarettes, that is!) and coffee. Love the Good night Irene reference; LOL! Did BF sing: "Some get a kick from cocaine. I'm sure that if I took just one more sniff that would bore me terrif ically too" or did he leave that line out? It's probably the greatest demonstration of Ferry's vibrato which there has ever been. > Wasn't this the first Roxy song Ferry is supposed to have written, or have > I dreamt that up? It appears to be a fact. Weird for a first song, isn't it? Tonally, it's quite harmonic compared to other Ferry compositions of the early days. You can lead me even higher. Throw me a line. Most original material contains these references - most notably Sign of the Times with "hard lines - crack down - on stony ground" and " bent on a life between the lines" . "Neon wind" is a phrase used to describe the heroin rush isn't it ?
