Koetting" Subject: [AVALON] Blown Away (Like a Hurricane) Redux Well, Folks- I called my mom in Naples, Florida, and she said although Jeanne hasn't done much to southwestern Florida like some other earlier suspects, she says she's damned tired of all of the terrible weather. And, she's afraid tourists might now won't want to visit Florida during the (hopefully) busy winter season. And, so, Colleen was clever with choosing "Like a Hurricane" for a previous SOTW. Which begs the question- were there any remixes? Say, like four of them? Heh heh.. Let's see- Charlie, Frances, Ivan (The Terrible), Ivan (The Spawn), and now Jeanne.. I have managed to persuade Carlton Books to provide yet more signed copies of the great book "The Thrill Of It All". So if you didn't yet buy a copy, you could still score a free SIGNED copy. This competition is open to anyone and Carlton Books have confirmed they are prepared to ship book prizes to winners worldwide, so don't go thinking you can't enter because you're not in the UK. There's SIX, yes count 'em, SIX signed hardcover copies of 'The Thrill Of It All', the new book on Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music: by David Buckley, (cover price - 20 pounds sterling) for you to WIN. Six lucky people can bag themselves a FREE copy of this (with plate signed by author David Buckley), the best yet book to chronicle the career of Bryan and his numerous cohorts. This time, the question is EVEN simpler and the contest is much easier to enter. Just go to www.remembertheeighties.com, click on "This Week's News" and follow instructions. It's a straightforward answer and e-mail address that's required, submit and you could be a winner. I've currently no other competitions planned, so this is your chance to win a copy of the book (complete with signed plate). A spritely, spirited effort but IMHO not as good as Bryan's version/arrangement.. Thorougly enjoyable evening though, absolutely hilarious and they can certainly play - I would recommend you see them if you've not had the chance - 90 mins (excluding a 30 minute bar break in the middle where they mingled for a chat with their audience - think Bryan and the boys/girls should try this! ) for a tenner. It's obvious that the (semi) annual cycle for this list has happened again, this time coinciding with the end of the summer doldrums. I had returned from a trip to find my in box filled with Ferry is dead (creatively) posts, and a flurry of "why can't we talk about this contentious issue" posts. History repeats, yet again. Mr. Ferry is his own person. The reason all of us are on this list is because Mr. Ferry (with and without various collaborators) is a unique person, with a unique sensibility. We like his work. Something about his work touches something in each of us that no one else can touch in quite the same way. Mr. Ferry OWES us nothing except to be Bryan Ferry. Even if that seems maddening at times. Lost opportunities? Probably. Spotty recording history? Surely. High ticket prices? Definitely. The list goes on. Given the chance would any of us kidnap and hold Mr. Ferry prisoner and make him over as WE would like him? I wouldn't. Because an essential spark of what makes BF, BF, would be lost, I.E., his own uniqueness. (However the idea of locking BF in the studio does have it's appeal.) Mr. Ferry is alive and (let's hope) still producing work. There are many fans of musicians, Elvis comes to mind, who have a finite career preserved in amber to dissect, ad-infinitum. So we disgruntled fans have a choice. We like the "product" that is Bryan Ferry, or we don't. If you don't go follow someone else like Elvis or... Lawrence Welk. _____________ On my trip I took the Stranded and Flesh + Blood CDs, neither of which I had listened to recently. Stranded is of course a classic, but the whole thing seems flawed by Psalm. Psalm, Triptych (and Amazing Grace, later on) seem odd in the Ferry cannon. The idea of the roue manque (this list will strip out the accents) we all know and love singing hymns has always seemed perverse to me. Any comments on this? Flesh + Blood is the Roxy album we love to hate, usually at the bottom of the list in our semi-sientific polls. However I was surprised at how good it sounded. I've never cared for the RM version of In The Midnight Hour, but it's certainly no embarasment. Workmanlike, competent and actually daring in it's re-imagining of the song. Whereas the cover of 8 miles high is actually more ambitious. (no it's not a drug song, it's about a trip to London) A lot like the hazy -- echoey second version of Angel Eyes. An out-take from Manifesto? The "hits", Oh Yeah, Same Old Scene & My Only Love, sound fresh as ever, but maybe not so exciting because we hear them, at least live, so often. Everybody rags on Rain Rain Rain, still better than most of what passes for music. The Hymn-like, but entirely secular, Running Wild is just a wonderful quiet way to end the record, great guitar work. The standouts in a way are; the shimmering piano & horn work on Over You:; and the necro-gloss of Strange Delight, which makes the idea of opening a vein in the bath almost appealing. Enough rattling, Regards, R Deagle ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V9 #246 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
