Ferry doesn't have substance usage at the top of his list of favourite subject matter, and not always undisguised, but nonetheless.... Off the top of my head (and possibly not completely accurate quotes): Casanova: Now you're flirting with heroin, or is it cocaine? Both Ends Burning: Do I have the speed to carry on? Bitters End (SOTW candidate? Is this line about a spiked drink?): Note his reaction, acid sharp; should make the cognoscenti think Mother of Pearl (Tell me this song isn't about altered consciousness!): I've been up all night, party-time-wasting is too much fun (etc., etc.) Guy Lawley London England - -----Original Message----- From: owner-avalon@smoe.org [mailto:owner-avalon@smoe.org] On Behalf Of KWil632057@aol.com Sent: 25 September 2004 22:50 To: avalon@smoe.org Subject: Re: [AVALON] Lou Reed-Covers. And I think we've discussed "In Your Mind" as a products of his L.A. drug period. And what about "Can't Let Go"? If this isn't cocaine induced paranoia, I don't know what is: It's a winding road from Cuesta Way down sunset to the beach And Canoga Park is a straight safe drive too far out of reach But now the headlights are flashin' by so fast All directions seem the same And the windscreen wipers keep a beat repeatin' You can't let go again What's in a name on the street tonight? I'm only a face in the crowd I'm all in the dark and afraid tonight Nowhere to run or to hide But I can't let go No But still, when Bryan sings about drugs he is, for me, able to transcend the depression and filth of that whole lifestyle. Even his drug songs sound sophisticated! Lou Reed, VU, and others such as Johnny Thunders, Hanoi Rocks, Nico or the New York Dolls are singing grimy war stories about the lost souls of the Warhol Warhol's Factory or just the heroin lifestyle. I mean, a song like "The Kids" is just there to make you cry. However, I did read that "The Kids" was a gimmick, that someone in Lou's band got the producer's kids into the studio, and told them that their mother was dead just to get them to cry. Shame on you, Lou! The woman can't check her wing mirror, let alone topple governments. It was only a few years back that Dave Stewart and Bryan Ferry took on Rory Bremner and Tony Blair at Tennis (I understand Bremner's weak backhand lost them the game). I wouldn't mind being a fly on the wall for the post match pint! So I wonder given all that's happened in the last couple of years, if they are still speaking to each other? I agree it has a very cinematic quality. Note that by and large, the song's made up of two chords only (e minor and b minor, I think) and depends a lot on the development of the arrangement and the tone colours. 'Which Way To Turn' from 'Mamouna' is a similar example - two chords, lots of texture. > It is obviously a studio song and the 7' live version during Frantic > Concerts was too long and the weakest part of the show coming after the > endless vocal final of My Only Love, Tara, Limbo (great song which doesn't > need much voice ressources). I once said and still beleive this set list was > first decided to protect Ferry's voice. So I understand the choice of BAG > but don't really appreciate. For me, it was one of the best choices during the 'Frantic' tour - it featured Ferry on unmistakable piano, and the prolonged ending seemed quite enjoyable to BF; I remember TGPT looking over to Ferry at the Berlin show to see when the song was to end, and Bryan kept playing and playing, while Lucy's synth swells provided a great sonic wash. BTW, I don't think it's *that* easy to think, especially the vowels during the chorus require a higher vocal pitch, so The Bry wasn't that much protecting his vocal cords here...
