Berlin is a very sad album that it can be hard to listen to. For me the same goes for his grief-album: Magic and loss. It must take a lot of pain to write that kind of albums. If Bryan should make more covers, I think he should try some more Lou Reed-stuff, instead of those so-so Dylan songs. Maybe Ecstasy? He's only made 2 Reed-covers so far, hasn't he? Ole np Lou Reed's new live-album: Animal serenade. Great stuff. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Sep 2004 13:35:41 EDT From: Go2Sweeney@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Lou Reed-Covers. Lou Reed repertory doesn't fit Ferry's one. As far as I can appreciate the lyrics, Bryan Ferry gives a positive message, not Lou Reed. Is there any Ferry's songs dealing with drugs for instance ? Their marketing images are rather opposite. When Ferry does a cover from Dylan, it's not really a surpise he improves the original version. Just because Dylan sings great songs like a "casserole" and he has never really care about putting the finishing touches. His music sounds like a one shot first writing. Like Lennon. Lou Reed has a very peculiar voice, like a trademark, and has been always surrounded by very efficient arrangers and players. His songs are final products. So difficult to improve. If possible. And writing risky songs is worthwhile and deserving when you are a well-established singer instead of betting on an old classical recipe : easy song+your voice+your name ("Dance Away" ?). Moreover, being original is a duty for a british artist ;) BAG is much more an atmosphere than a song and it could have been an appropriate soundtrack for many movies. I will not appreciate this song sung by someone else. The delicate voice of BF echoes the short mysterious sentences of the instruments. It is obviously a studio song and the 7' live version during Frantic Concerts was too long and the weakest part of the show coming after the endless vocal final of My Only Love, Tara, Limbo (great song which doesn't need much voice ressources). I once said and still beleive this set list was first decided to protect Ferry's voice. So I understand the choice of BAG but don't really appreciate. In the live versions, my frenchy ears often hear the choir saying "Poisoned Girls" instead of "Boys and Girls". Am I so wrong? I think a Bryan cover of "Goodnight Ladies" or "Perfect Day" would be splendid, not all of Lou's repertoire is in the back alley, or melting in a spoon, well at least the Bowie-glazed Transformer stuff. Maybe he should consider collaborating with an established younger artist/artists (if the ego would allow), or is that too far-fetched? I'm eagerly awaiting to hear what P.J. Harvey and Nick Cave have done with Marianne Faithfull (*Before The Poison* next week... pretty or bleak or a bit of each?)
