It's called being civilised. We constantly revise what that means - we (in Britain) don't do bear-bating or kids-up-chimneys or slavery any more because we've moved on from that. Sadly, plenty of thugs from both Town and the Countryside still mess with badgers and hares for entertainment but hopefully fewer As Time Goes By. If more people try to use organically-produced animal products, the cruelty that exists in farming (and yes, I eat meat and approve of good husbandry of animals by farmers who generally I wish to see thriving) which most of us tacitly allow (myself included) will become unnecessary. An RSPCA pal of mine expressed the wish that more people would buy organic milk as this would wipe out a huge swathe of 'casual' suffering. So now that's what I do and I pass it on to the assembled Avalonians. Not much, but we all gotta start somewhere (if we care at all). . . . and all of which are constantly being addressed (if not solved) by the same MPs. Those MPs have been democratically voted in *twice* now by a very large majority with a precise mandate to do exactly what they are doing. It should have been done immediately after the 97 election, but I'll happily accept it now. The Parliament Act is going to have to be used because the undemocratic preponderantly right-wing House of Lords will continue to block the ban again and again if it isn't. Which is a good reason to get rid of them too :) Something that is very hard for me to understand: if hunting with hounds is banned we're told that thousands will be put out of work - out of work farriers will apparently litter the countryside. Does this really mean that if hunting is banned the horses involved will all be carted off to the glue factory early? Do the riders only ride horses in order to hunt? Will the huge numbers of kids riding for pleasure disappear? Horses nadgers to that. BTW - I live in what was described once as a 'fairly pleasant village in a semi-rural area'. The 'Countryside Alliance' don't represent everyone they purport to. As for Otis, well, I blame the parents :) Golly - I could never write that much about Like a Hurricane, though Andy's solo on the Avalon tour was quite marvellous.
