Listening to it now it sounds a lot better than I remember. I saw Roxy or Ferry for the first time at the show where The Hight Road EP was recorded at in Glasgow in 1982. Ferry introduced it by saying 'so then, like a hurricane ehh' (It was broadcast on Radio Clyde a few months later and is on some bootleg somewhere) I remember being dissapointed at the show that I didn't know the song as at that time I thought I had managed to all the albums and all the singles with non album b-sides. I thought this was one that got away from me. I didn't realise it was a one off cover for the tour until the radio broadcast several months later. I had spent the time in between getting every discography I could get a hold off to find this track I didn't have. 'Barking', 'wrong' and 'tree' spring to mind Anyway, back to the song. The intro is very much like Both Ends Burning on the same tour where Guy Fletcher is using the same phased synth string sound. It was one of the better tracks on that tour and was a good showcase for all the musicians (maybe it would not have worked as well if a studio version had been done because of this). Neil Hubbard is first up and plays more dirtier (can I say that) guitar than he normally does. Andy MacKay borrows some lines out of his own The Numberer amd Manzanera plays some blisitering stuff too. Someone mentioned the lines 'I am just a dreamer, you are just a dream' that sounds just like the sort of lyric Ferry would write where he uses the same words in a different way like in More Than This: V1 As free as the wind, hopefully learning V2 No care in the world, maybe I'm learning or in Is Your Love Strong Enough? V1 With someone I could live for V2 Someone that I would die for J.O'B. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Sep 2004 16:01:22 -0500 From: MarlanaK@webtv.net (M.M.K.) Nice idea to talk about music whatever the chosen song is. But surely, I would have prefer a SOTMonth... I give my opinion on this song whitout any references of the use of it in a concert like giving a breather to the singer, bringing the players to the fore, waving good bye, changing the atmosphere (for instance "The thrill of it all" in Frantic summer 2002 concerts introducing the rocky part of the show, the best version you have never heard don't you), etc. So just the song. Well, I won't comment the words also ! So just the music As far as I know, all the versions of "Like a hurricane" sound alike which is not the case of few songs (LITD is much more better in the 1994 Tour - listen to L.A. 08/12/94 -with a tempo a little bit faster and a swinging rhythm guitar all along the song ) What I like in this song : 1-The beginning is a good example of setting an atmosphere. The short guitar "sentences" and the variations on drums give a nice mysterious environnement. 2-Of course the way Ferry songs the verses. Bewitched. What I don't like. 1-The chorus. Sorry but for my ears it does not sound as Roxy at all. To much choir. May be ABBA ? May be a boyscouts band ? To far from the mysterious beginning. The charm is broken. 2-To much instrumental breaks without many meanings. But it may be useful for reasons above. 3-The end. The last bars. The band just stop. What I disagree and do not understand the reason why. This almost continous biguine-samba beat on the drums. semiquaver/quaver/quaver/quarternote. As a variation OK. Even great. But not almost continuously. You have it first in few bars at the beginning - before Ferry sings- and immediatly followed by a much more better, simpliest, and efficient rock and roll beat they unfornately never use later. I'll always regret I wasn't in Cannes for this tour. I know some Roxy fans rank this album as less worthy but I think the band is in top form here. Just listen to Guy Fletcher's swirling, swirling, swirling keyboards intro.... sounds just like a hurricane to me. We're having Ivan's winds here as I write ..swirling, swirling! Manzo and Neil Hubbard couldn't be better and Andy's saxophone is just out of this world. Then there are the voices of the Mighty Fonzi with Michelle Cobbs and Tawatha Agee. All the elements tossed into a virtual storm by Jimmy Maelen who I believe filled in for The Great Paul after his motorcycle spill. I'm told it was a sultry, steamy night in Cannes ... very appropriate to play "Like a Hurricane" in this setting. Actually, it's a rather fabulous song . Glad to see SOTW back on Avalon. I always learn so much from you guys and gals. Now I'll be humming this tune for a few days....and I can't get it out of my mind.
