Felt cheated somehow. Playing a cover when I wanted to hear my favs. Thought at the time, 'this is just a lazy filler of a song, (like My Only Love) so Phil can meander along for few minutes while Bryan takes a leak/changes outfit'. A catchy number right enough though, hummed it all the way home that night. It's not a Roxy number for me though, it's the Roxy equivalent of Wooly Bully, an enjoyable wee diversion. I would love a UK DVD of the video collection and New town. The B&G and Bete Noire vids were excellent. Now that was COOL. Talking of COOL I was listening to New Town thru the hi fi speakers and one of the best bits is Nimrod. Also the Mamouna tour used "Because Youre Mine" as intro which had a good atmosphere. Other things similar are Valentine Instrumental and Nocturne. And Boys and Girls the track. And Spell on You Haunted House mix. And of course the one that opened the Roxy tour - I've had a mental blank on the name. Maybe he should pursue this type of atmospheric stuff - he's really good at it and it would make a welcome change. Frantic may have been Alphaville or vice versa but it didn't have that strangeness about the atmosphere that Alphaville did. Just a thought. > Message date : Sep 14 2004, 04:25 AM > From : "Jeff Turner" > To : avalon@smoe.org > Copy to : > Subject : [AVALON] Roxy/Ferry DVDs , and for Ferry, New Town and the Mamouna > show that was filmed but never released even on VHS. > - -- Whatever you Wanadoo: http://www.wanadoo.co.uk/time/ This email has been checked for most known viruses - find out more at: http://www.wanadoo.co.uk/help/id/7098.htm ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Sep 2004 05:10:38 -0700 (PDT) From: Joel Hurd Subject: Re: [AVALON] Ferry DVDs & A suggestion > Good point. I would disagree with both of these, I think by this time he had entered his commercial period, from which he has yet to emerge. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, I suppose....his music remains very, very listenable. He is a great talent. I think EJ's dark, emotional period was very early on, "Take Me to the Pilot" "Burn Down the Mission", "Amoreena" which he sang with sort of an American southern twang, and "Madman Across the Water". However don't forget unlike BF whose lyrics are his own, EJ never penned a single lyric. Jonathan writes : "I'm not sure how much emotion Ferry has in his vocal style. It always seemed cold and detached (and right for the songs)". I think in the practically the whole Mamouna album he sounds like he's actually crying. I've noticed some have jokingly said of this album "they forgot to lay down the vocal track" or whatever, but when Ferry gets emotional he gets quieter. Or his voice gets that tremble when he gets intense, I'm thinking of "Love Me Madly Again". And of course, "If There is Something"....I hear a lot of feeling/emotion/passion in his lyrics and his delivery of them. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Sep 2004 18:20:41 +0100 From: "Thomas Wallace" Subject: [AVALON] DVD Releases I'd welcome the re-issue of the videos on DVD format even if only to allow for the possibility of now deleted videos getting damaged. However if New Town, The Video Collection and Total Recall are to be introduced in DVD format I would hope that those responsible would take full advantage of the medium by adding interviews or producing an extended inlay booklet. Otherwise they should be budget priced releases. On the idea of a DVD from the Mamouna tour the obvious addition to this would be the interview video produced as a promotion item for the press. When it was anounced a while back that there would be no DVD/Video release from the frantic tour I thought this may be for reasons of poor potential sales, however I now wonder if the true reason was that it may have impacted on future ticket sales as future shows would have followed a near identical set list folk who already had the DVD may have been less inclined to attend extra shows. It would be interesting to know who has the release rights for the Stockholm '76 and Japan '77 footage that is now so widly available pirate DVD's, could there be a situation where these could be released in a similar independant form similar to the Musikladden footage without requiring permission. I recently bought the re-issued "On The Road" DVD sadly there is no added footage or booklet. To top that the the track indexing was sloppy, go straight to "Mother of Perl" and it jumps to the main body of the song and misses out the intro so it's not surprising that it has now been bounced down to budget price. I find myself singing it, often. The lyrics remind me of Ferry lyrics, especially this bit : I am just a dreamer But you are just a dream You could have been anyone to me It was a treat to hear a song like this out of nowhere on the Avalon tour. Ferry likes to cover R&B artists, but he also likes the rock/folkies : Dylan, the Byrds (8 Miles High on Flesh & Blood), and Neil Young. Although I think I read somewhere it was Manzanera's idea to cover 8 Miles High... Good choice, Colleen! But it sounds like a great synthesis of 2 of my favorites (Bryan and Neil), so I will make it a priority to hear. As for Mamouna, I like it much better than Frantic. Mamouna is painstakingly produced in a way that reminds me of Avalon, Manifesto or Boys and Girls, not to mention Bete Noire (which I actually like). To me, Bryan Ferry and later Roxy Music should be very very produced. Mamouna creates a mood for me, a world to which I can escape. "Don't Want to Know" makes me feel like I'm walking in a big city late at night after it has rained and there is a clear breeze and everything feels perfect. It's like good weather (in any season). It is an environment. It touches me in a formal, aesthetic, but not really a human way. Frantic sounds more ordinary to me, though I like "Cruel". Of course I love emotional music. For me, this is Neil Young or Lou Reed or the Velvet Underground. Many of Lou's songs make me want to cry (I can hardly bear to hear "The Kids" or most songs from Berlin). Songs by the Velvet Underground are sad too, as is Nico's version of "The End".
