But it's too snap a judgement to say that it's all over, surely. But it's certainly no positive thing, that's for sure. It's certainly been quiet and I'd hoped/thought it might be the summer vacations? I can say that there have already been over 60 separate entries for the contest to win a signed copy of The Thrill Of It All - The Story Of Bryan Ferry And Roxy Music by David Buckley, published by Andreeutsch/Carlton Books. This is the best book so far about the band and I guess Avalonians are steering clear of the newsgroup onlist but still voting with their single keyboard digits. Elsewhere in the world of Roxy, there's only BF's appearance as Fashion Musique (hardly the High Road) and Phil's appearance at the Guitar Celebration at Wembley to talk about. And surprise, surprise, no-one is saying much about it. Manzo's own website can report that Dave Gilmour will be playing his 1954-issue 0001 Fender Strat but gives no indication as to what Phil might come up with on the night. As ever, Roxy members' activities seem to be covered by the Official Secrets Act. And arouses nil interest as a result. But make sure YOU don't miss out on the chance to win a signed hardcover edition of the new Roxy biog. Just send the first 8 words of The Thrill Of It All to _chandla911@aol.com_ (mailto:chandla911@aol.com) before September 12 and remember to include your name and mailing address (in case you win - you stand as much chance as everyone else). Theres hardly much decent written stuff on Roxy. I just read a copy and its as dull as beige. J ps. Leave your brolly at home. No storm coming whatsoever. Maybe a light drizzle at best. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Sep 2004 10:16:20 EDT From: Chandla911@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Each to his/her own I think there is fair comment all round, but the Buckley book does have the benefit of painstaking research (knows that BF had all boys and that Tara is not a girl, for instance). Not sure what the forthcoming books by other writers will offer, but this one is clearly a work of a critical friend rather than the sycophant on the payroll style of biog. Phil was talking last week on the radio about trying to get a new Roxy album together with the 1972 line-up; zero response from fans. Roxy played a private gig in London two months ago - nil response. Manzo will be at Wembley later this month and Ferry at a fashion gala. Nada. I think there is a quiet, but perhaps it's the way the activity is (not) being reported? "Zero response from fans" ??!! Is that a quote from Phil? If so, then that's pretty disheartening. Is this interview available as an MP3 (not a realplayer stream)? If someone could provide it, I would be grateful. > Roxy played a private gig in London two months ago - nil response. I thought that that was a false rumour, so I stand corrected. Again, nil response is very disappointing. By the way, who is the source of the "nil response" quote? > n/p Listening For The Weather - Bic Runga Ahhh. Bic Runga. Good choice there. I've just started getting into her music. Exciting to hear new music. best, - ---joel . . __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Even though I'm not much of a bookworm (I get bored easily), I look forward to reading Buckley's book. I just wish someone would produce a Roxy book explaining the themes/inspirations/meanings behind the songs/lyrics. Now that would be interesting! Re: a new Roxy album as suggested by Phil! Bryan has (supposedly) said that he's not as interested in writing as he is in touring so, will someone else do it or will it be a group effort - no pun intended! Could Dave Stewart be brought in to help? It would be great if Phil could pull it off, getting the band together again, but it seems unlikely at present. The 'secret/private' gig! I remember, at the time, there were questions on all the forums, but they were either denied or ignored. Even Paul finally posted "what gig?", and added a 'confused' smiley! Fans were left totally confused - probably still are? I think this 'secret news' broke in June, around the time of the cancelled UK concerts and a lot of fans were upset that Bry could do one and not the other!! I'm ready to stand corrected on this point. As for the fashion gala, I personally think Ferry is selling himself short by doing these shows. He's not reaching the true fans but merely adding background music for those who couldn't care less! I know Ferry is seen as a fashion icon but singing to that lot is like feeding sweets to swine? I'll even go as far as to suggest that the fat-cats producing and attending those shows don't have more than one or two Roxy/Ferry albums in their collections! I'd be surprised if the models even know who he is? I say that because if it weren't for me, my daughters wouldn't have a clue who Roxy/Ferry were. Wait, is that why he's doing it, to put himself in the eye of the younger generation??
