The give away was the name on the flatbed stage - "Strummerville", and the presence of Mike Jones. Then there was Julian Temple talking to Alan Yentob (BBC big wig) -also you can see small gauge filming equipment all around the place, more documentary level than feature stuff. Also present were Keith Allen and best mates Damien Hirst and Bez,all of whom all used to knock about with Joe. Keith Allen seems to be cornering the market as narrator of bizarre documentaries of late (and is proving very good) - did anyone see that one recently dealing with the little boy child prodigy who specialised in antiques who grew up to have a sex change in her early twenties? She was entirely eclipsed by the strangeness of the rest of her family. Anyway, I digress. The connection for us was Andy, looking fit and healthy and playing again in public. But the good signs are that we may get to see that performance on a TV near you (or taped for you oversea-ers) some time soon. King of style Bryan Ferry was smoothness personified as he despatched a stunning set to the delight of another sold-out Kings Dock Arena. In a beautifully paced evening, singer songwriter Dean Johnson followed by classical group Duel started off proceedings, before the man himself took to the stage. Starting solo at the piano with 'Only Face', he was then joined by a single violin for his version of Bob Dylan's 'Don't Think Twice', before the show upped in pace with the arrival of his brilliant band, featuring long-time associates Chris Spedding on guitar and former Roxy Music drummer Paul Thompson. The big hits followed, 'Don't Stop The Dance', 'Avalon', and to bring the house down, 'Love is The drug'. Ferry's attachement with Liverpool goes way back to the days when he saw The Beatles perform here as a boy, and his affection for the place was obvious by the warmth with which he talked to the audience - and by the way the audience responded. Another great night at the Pops.' Violin?!! Where is Colin?
