This wasn't the usual outdoor gig. We were aware of the stage being some 50 - 75 yards away, across a lake, some time ago. If we had been daft enough (or drunk enough) to work it out beforehand, a small inflatable boat could have carried our squad to front stage, but no matter. It would have been funny though, with the yellow jacketed security in a state of confusion about whether to swim out and get us, or just leave us be. You know, I think they would have done the latter. Would have been a laugh though. So, the alternative checklist came into force for this event : 1) Meet at a local hostelry for pre-gig oiling... check ! 2) Ensure we have a very satisfying 10 seats in a row, front row centre... check ! (eternal thanks to our Roxy buddies for this, you know who you are) 3) Binoculars at the ready... check ! 4) Fresh strawberries for sustinence... check ! 5) Chilled Champagne, just for the hell of it... check ! And so it began. The plan was, of course, to crack open the Champers once Bryan had come on, but the support act of 2 camply dreadful violinists turning classical pieces into pop mush together with a lot of very synchronised mincing had us struggling for a drink within their first 2 numbers. I've heard some people 'drink to forget', well, we now know what they mean. I think they called themselves 'Duel', or 'Bile', or something similar. About 25 minutes (though it seemed like years) later they had pirhouetted off stage, though unfortunately not straight into the lake. A very short wait until the main event, and there was Julia with the now well known solo. We were warned beforehand of a 'slightly shorter set' so knew what to expect. Great to see Bryan again though, it's been a while, Shepherds Bush oh so long ago being the last gig I attended. A sadly all too similar set to then, but no matter. The troublesome voice held up pretty well until the last few numbers, where cracks definitely began to appear, disguised though by a few more guitar and sax solos than usual which extended a few numbers, particularly LST. 'Thrill' seemed a couple of verses short to me, though I'm not sure if this was the case, or was an effect of the Champers on my brain. I'm sure someone will let me know. Mick Green played so well, and probably got the biggest cheer of the evening during the band introductions. BEB was blistering, probably the best of the evening, featuring Katie plus 1 in new slinky little red numbers. The binoculars were passed back and forth along our row with alarming speed at this juncture, with a few of us pretending to look at Bryan. It was a great evening though, very different to the usual due to the rather strange setting, Kenwood being more suited to Classical concerts, a lovely place nonetheless. Oh, and the fireworks to finish were spectacular. I think you can always tell how a gig went by the immediate reaction afterwards, and we all seemed to be wanting more. Having said that, there's definitely an air of 'oh give it a rest Bry for a year' about it all. Certainly for his own sake re his health, not to mention a change of setlist would be so, so welcome after all this time. This is the sixth year on the trot that Bryan has been doing live gigs, and perhaps that is a major factor in the voice stakes. It's certainly a factor in our bank balances. But we'll always be there no matter what, and that's the main thing. Reecey... I saw the first concert of the Manifesto tour in Stockholm 1979, I'm getting old, and it was not satisfactuary performance. I'd seen other bands that were better, not the Sex Pistols in Stockholm 1977, but Little Feat in Portland 1978 and Peter Gabriel in Stockholm 1979, not to speak of Ian Dury and the Blockheads or Bob Marley in Stockholm around that time. It's not that Roxy were bad in 1979, they were, as Jocelyn put it, creepy. Stockholm was after all the first gig in almost three years and I've heard it since and it's ok, but I remember being undervelmed at the time. - -- Daniel ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jul 2004 17:29:42 +0000 From: "Christian H. They should be stand-ups, with the camper one of the two announcing every two minutes "you really are a wonderful audience" after one solitary handclap of appreciation. Maybe it was high-irony and it just went over our heads. But the lake distance to the stage proved a problem all round. The visiting photographers struggled to get any shot of significance even with the most powerful lens. There was always this white railing running right across the middle of shot cutting out heads. they looked like they were performing at a racecourse (maybe to make up for Goodwood being cancelled). It was also difficult for any type of electricity to build between audience and performers. Mind you our attempts were rewarded by Ferry turning to instruct the band that they were going to Do the Strand for the first time since the set was shortened. And his voice was OK in close mike, in the more acoustic numbers. He is definitely still having trouble with the rockier numbers, and the sound guys are having trouble miking it to get anything more out of his failing voice. But he didn't sound any worse to me than at Thetford when all the trouble started so I guess that means he's improving - if you see what I mean! But it's all the little nuances that make these gigs fun, like the free mosquito repellent and Green and Black chocolates to go with the champagne. It was fascinating to see mosquitos dancing around the lake in time to TTOIA and Moorhens and geese Do the Strand. The reflection on the lake making the band look like they were performing in the mouth of a great white whale. Funniest of all was when Avalon became Savalon (well you did dare us Andrew S) and then became Sad Jim Lawn - try it, it scans beautifully. Oh you wicked, wicked you. For those that have not watched The Cat's Meow http://imdb.com/title/tt0266391/ do. It's has a certain Roxy a la Avalon feel to it. Especially since it has the recording of Al Jolson singing "Avalon" over the opening credits, never mind that is not his 1920 version, but rather from 1946. His singing seemed much stronger than I'd expected, but his talking was showing signs of weakness and huskiness. Not saying his singing was great, he seemed to be holding it all back in reserve, but I was expecting much worse. And the weather was kind, if not exactly sultry! Shame about the 60 minute set. But better than nowt, as has been said on this list before. And for me, much much better as I think this is the first time in a long time that I've heard "Don't Stop The Dance". I've looked through the labour of love that is John O'Brien's vivaroxymusic site and, despite seeing BF solo about 7 or 8 times in the past 3 years, I don't see DSTD at any of the ones I have been to previously. Have received 6PM from Phil's mail order site. Excellent service as usual, signed sleeve, etc...Very pleasant listening. But a question...the presence of Paul and Andy on the album must owe something to the Roxy reunion tour? Brian and Phil have always been friends as far as one can tell. But why is there no guest appearance from Bryan? Does anyone know? Is Bill able/prepared to comment? There's no way that this is a Roxy album by any stretch of the imagination; no-one is really suggesting it is, despite the stuff going around on Nervenet about it technically being a Roxy album all but for the absence of BF. But I would have thought with all the collaborative working going on on this album that it would have been a nice gesture from BF to have sung on one song, following PM's great work on the Roxy tour. I know that Roxy players with the exception of BF have guested on each other's solo albums ever since whenever, but was there a conscious decision not to involve BF? One assumes that if Paul was available for the album, so was BF? Phil is playing at a concert at Wembley Arena with plenty of other famous guitarists to celebrate the Fender Stratocaster. Does anyone have any hard facts or conjectures (please state which) about what might be played by him that night? Is he an MD for the evening (I think there is a house band around which the star guests revolve)? Is he meaning to come on for a few songs only? If so, does anyone know which ones? Does Bryan Ferry have any middle names?
