A friend of mine with a passing fancy for Mr Ferry booked a couple of tickets for the erstwhile cancelled Kent date, asked yesterday if any of the other dates had been honoured. When I said not, he said "doesn't he do this on a regular basis, what's he got selective agoraphobia?" I said "laryngitis (apparently)" "more like takingthepissitis" came the reply. I have to say, there is a point to be made. David Bowie too has had to recently cancel concerts, but instead of labouring on half heatedly and announcing cancellations way too late to prevent fans travelling let alone cancelling hotels without forfeiting the full amount, he had the guts to follow his physician's orders and announce ON HIS WEBSITE that all further 11 concerts were cancelled (so don't give me that bull about insurers' insistence that the show can only be cancelled after an aborted sound check). And this from a man doing around 35 songs in some shows, reinventing his old catalogue live, and recording new material every year. So come on Bryan, enough's, enough, just give this tour up as a bad job. Concentrate on the album and then tour it when fit, with some renewed enthusiasm from both artist and audience. If we're cancelled at Petworth at the nth hour, you know there'll be 3,000 people turning up at your gaff for a bottle party - so you better start defrosting the vol au vents now. And if that's not incentive for a miraculous recovery, I don't know what is.
