Neither the US nor the European stores have the full Roxy or Ferry catalogue available but more curious is the difference between the UK and the US stores, which are the only two I've visited. The US is offered Roxy Music (i.e., the first Roxy Music album) and For Your Pleasure. The UK is offered Avalon and Viva! Roxy Music. If anything, I'd have thought that the converse might have been more appropriate, given the high regard for the first two albums in the UK. Ferry's sole UK offering is the single for It's All Over Now, Baby Blue. ("Did you mean Bryan Harry?" asks the US store, helpfully when I try to look for the US equivalent. Bryan HARRY?) In general, there's a big difference between the two stores' contents: try checking for Kelis in both places, for example. It being opening day for the store in the UK, curiosity got the better of me and I ended up playing safe with Evening Star - a Fripp/Eno album I've been meaning to buy for 20 years now - and some tracks from the 3rd Velvets album that I never quite got round to repurchasing on CD. The buying and download process was very smooth. Tracks start at 79 pence. The iTunes application (jukebox, MP3 player and streamer, CD burning software, Internet radio client) is a free download for Windows 2000/XP and Macintosh but purchases from the iTunes store are only available to you if you have a credit card registered in the US, the UK, France or Germany - everyone else is limited to a 30 second preview of each track in the store. The much better (but dodgier, and industry-unsustainable) alternative is http://www.allofmp3.com/index2.shtml That Russian site has a HUGE catalogue of digital music from most every artist out there, including extensive catalogues for Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry, including many free albums of theirs. > ("Did you mean Bryan Harry?" asks the US store, helpfully when I try > to look for the US equivalent. Tracks start at 79p. 79 pence (or 99 cents) isn't that great really. I think the greatest benefit is the ability to buy an individual track. > The iTunes application (jukebox, MP3 player and streamer, CD burning > software, Internet radio client) is a free download for Windows > 2000/XP and Macintosh. Being tied to a proprietary computer music format can be a bad thing in my opinion, especially ones with Digital "Rights" Management (DRM). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_management These WMA/AAC/stream music files for your PC/iPOD/Mac have drawbacks of course. Things like DRM restrictions, no booklet/inlay card, no artwork, no physical media, and questionable fidelity compared with CD audio (and of course SA-CD audio) discs. - --joel __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Agreed. >Being tied to a proprietary computer music format can be a bad thing >in my opinion, especially ones with Digital "Rights" Management (DRM). >http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_management I'd like a widely used, industry-supported standard that didn't make me feel tied to a) an equipment manufacturer or b) a single software provider. Right now, I'm wary of doing anything that might help Microsoft gain a monopoly position in the music market, however inevitable that result might eventually seem. DRM, though, is here to stay - it's just the implementation that needs improving. Apple's scheme is flawed (the AAC format that iTunes songs is an open format but its FairPlay DRM scheme is not and is not being licensed out) but right now, given the iPod range, iTunes software and the alternatives, I'm happy to invest a little in this from time to time but I'm not about to stop buying CDs. But as you say, it's great to be able to buy the odd track that you like from an album that otherwise wouldn't appeal, or to pick a previously unreleased track from a compilation. Ferry's rather good cover of Smoke Dreams is an example. I already had this single but it's good to see it available online for those who never got around to hearing it. >Things like DRM restrictions, no booklet/inlay card, no artwork, no >physical media, and questionable fidelity compared with CD audio >(and of course SA-CD audio) discs. I'm happy to get rid of physical media itself, which lost its magic for me when vinyl gave way to CDs. And being able to take your collection of CDs with you on your laptop is a great thing - most of my CDs and all my vinyl are still in storage somewhere. But yes, I too like real packaging and real artwork and high audio quality. (And while tracks you buy from online stores like iTunes do come with on-screen artwork this is really no substitute.) There's something ironic about the fact that the audio quality of the music that people are listening to is falling again as technology advances but iPods and Dell DJs demonstrate (as the hideous sound of prerecorded audio cassettes showed demonstrated years before them) that portability and convenience beat audio quality to a humble third place for many people. Eventually, given the inevitable bandwidth increases and the rapidly falling price of storage, the need for lossy compression will disappear - it's just a question of when. For now, sampling your own CDs at 192 kbps AAC or Ogg Vorbis is a pretty good compromise. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V9 #152 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
