She was telling how the dreadful fated nightflight to Nairobi had changed her outlook on life and made her appreciate everything so much more. Johnny Walker said he remembered seeing press pictures and wasn't Bryan Ferry also there? Paraphrasing here but she answered: "Yes, Bryan and Lucy were upstairs with the children and miraculously continued sleeping throughout the whole thing even though the plane was shaking and clattering as though it was being really shaken. Isaac was awake and said something like "Bloody hell!" and it was at that point that Bryan woke up and the first thing he said was, "Isaac, mind your language" before he fully came to and realised the predicament. Pretty much what we'd heard before, but this anecdote started a series of Roxy-related totems last evening. Went to NEC and the support band was Goldfrapp, of whom way too much has been written here. But suffice to say they are still heavily in Black Cherry mode and one end of the NEC is not the right place for them to present their set when quite so many people are quite so far away. Main act Duran Duran were very disappointing and the show quite ill-conceived. For instance, on the few occasions that the back screens were used, a huge lighting rig came down and obscured them. Weird. But anyway, in the souvenir tour programme (15 pounds! ouch), they each attempt to represent themselves in different way. Nick Rhodes uses the oft-employed man's method of lists. Among these: IEDAH is listed number 1 in fave 10 glam rock songs. Phil Manzanera is listed in top 10 guitarists. Andy Mackay in list of people Duran Duran have collaborated with (many of you may know what that was). Roxy listed as a concert that he'd attended with John Taylor. I think it's safe to say that Nick Rhodes and Duran Duran are Roxy fans (I once met Simon Le Bon at a Purcell Room music debate with Brian Eno speaking; Simon said he rates Brian numero uno and had often wanted him to produce their albums - now there's a notion!). Finally, to cap it all, while we all know DD swiped Antony Price as suits designer once their Rio ship had come in, last night their band line-up featured Sarah Brown on backing vocals (last seen, by me, in Bryan Ferry's band). We had met on a couple of occasions many years ago. He came to a Be Bop Deluxe show at ( I think), The Palladium in New York, back in the 'seventies. He stood in the wings to watch the show and we exchanged pleasantries afterwards. A few days later, he asked Be Bop's keyboard player, Andy Clark, to join Roxy Music. Andy had the good manners to turn him down. Some months later, Roxy Music were passing through the same airport as Be Bop Deluxe, somewhere in America on one of our seemingly interminable tours. A pleasant coincidence, they were heading in one direction and we in another but we all stopped and chatted on the concourse, comparing notes about where we'd each been playing and where we were off to next. I recall Phil Manzanera being friendly, chatty and cheerful. A nice man, I thought. We all wished each other well and dashed off to catch our respective planes. I haven't seen Bryan since that time. Until last Saturday on York station: I would have asked a member of Roxy Music to join Be-bop Deluxe ... Live in the airage is a wonderful live album. - -- Daniel ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Apr 2004 09:57:24 +0000 From: "Tracy Connell" Subject: RE: [AVALON] I haven't seen Bryan since that time. Until last Saturday on York station: As he approached the platform bench where I was sitting, Mr. Ferry, looking tanned, healthy and wealthy, glanced over at me. I hesitated: should I say something? He quickly glanced away and then furtively looked over at me again. I thought it would appear rude if I didn't say something so I said, "Hello Bryan." He mumbled, "Hello there...," somewhat reluctantly. I could feel the resentment that he'd been recognised. He probably thought I was a middle-aged fan or something. I blushed, feeling foolish for speaking up in the first place but added the qualifying "Bill Nelson...," to perhaps jog his memory but he never broke his stride and moved quickly on down the platform to sit sulkily behind his newspaper in a platform shelter used mostly by the aged. When the train to London pulled in, I noted that he got into the first class carriage whilst Emi and I took our pre-booked economy class cheap seats with the regular punters. Pop stars, don't ya just love 'em? That aside though, it was good to see that Bryan was wearing a reasonable choice of hat last Saturday. A sporty tifter in my knowledgeable estimation. We'll overlook his rather misguided attempt at covering the classic songs of the 'thirties and 'forties on that recent album. The less said the better. Never try to usurp the Gods is my advice...You'll only end up at York station looking miserable. _________________________________________________________________ Tired of 56k?
