He was talking about how he went to a compreshensive school and was fortunate enough to have one teacher who was John Walters (who went on to produce John Peel shows), another who was Ian Carr (the trumpet player who also wrote a great book about Miles Davis) and yet another who was into playing trad jazz, all at the same school. I didn't pick up from any of this who he was, but wondered about the vocal intonation sounding quite so familiar. The next thing I knew, he is regaling host Paul Jones (ex-Manfred Mann) with tales of the band he formed after leaving school. It was called the Gas Board and featured a bunch of local art school people including Bryan Ferry and John Porter. He talked about the band and claimed that he attended the first ever Roxy Music rehearsal, but lost interest when he realised that this band would never come to anything (!). By the time I reached my destination, he had talked more about the work he had done with Jeff Beck and Van Morrison (so, Daniel, you see Ferry and Morrison have yet more in common!). Turns out it was Mike Figgis, promoting the new Scorsese Blues films collection, by way of his own musical career. The whole show is currently available online to listen to and Paul Jones always plays great music inbetween the chat. So you might want to hear it yourself. _http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio2_aod.shtml?paul_jones_ (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio2_aod.shtml?paul_jones) Best wishes Richard Mills n/p http://_www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio2_aod.shtml?pauljones_ (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio2_aod.shtml?pauljones) ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Apr 2004 09:48:18 +0000 From: "Andrew Shearer" Subject: RE: [AVALON] Mike Figgis I believe the Martin Scorsese produced Blues Series of which Figgis's film is part is to start on BBC4 this Thursday.
