I recently had a very weird dream: I was at Ferry concert - all the usual stuff, until the end. After Do The Strand etc. he came back on for the encore. Like the rest of the audience I was hoping for something new or unusual. Can you guess what he performed - 'Puff the Magic Dragon', and it sounded great. I woke up laughing. Now I can't get the bloody song out of my head. Ah well, back to eavesdropping George ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Mar 2004 18:45:18 +0200 From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?Kenneth_Nystr=F6m?= Subject: Re: [AVALON] New song from Ferry hehehe "puff the magic dragon, lived by the sea.........." As regards releasing the track. I think Virgin or EG hold the copyright and therefore have the final say (I believe) in whether a track will be covered. They may defer to Ferry but I'm not sure if they have to - maybe someone else can enlighten us? I know I've heard of artists refusing their music to be used in adverts, so possibly Ferry would have the final say but I think it does depend on who owns the copyright. Also, if Birkin is covering a Ferry composed song, Virgin / EG (?)/ Ferry will be certainly earning royalties from sales and plays. Not to be sneezed at perhaps; I'd have thought Birkin has got a reasonable cult audience. It might even open up an audience further for Ferry? Gain attention in the press? Raise his profile? Finally, Birkin is to some a legend, indeed a sexual icon, and I can't imagine this wouldn't have appealed to Ferry's sensibilities. Maybe it's a combination of these elements which persuaded Ferry to collaborate? I certainly can't see him collaborating with arists of lesser stature or more contemporary in the same way as perhaps Tom Jones for example. The Casio keyboard thing? Well one of the best tracks from Frantic was I thought, I thought, and that had a very simplistic keyboard sound. I guess it's all down to our own tastes, says he who liked One Way Love too. Oh well, I guess everyone's stopped reading now. One final thought though.... I wouldn't be surprised if Birkin wasn't persuaded to do the song over some pillow talk from one of our own. (You know who you are (:-))) All the best, Andrew PS Anyone else pissed off with the way Rod Stewart is milking this "old standard" thing, in the way Ferry could've? >From: "Thomas Wallace" >To: "Avalon" >Subject: [AVALON] A fool for Jane >Date: Mon, 29 Mar 2004 23:17:20 +0100 > >Ok so I've only listened to the snippet of the re-made version of IEDAH >from >the Birkin album, but if this is anything to go by than I'd have to say >that >it's crap.
