Thank you, all. As always, Mr O'Brien does the work, comes up with the results and I find myself agreeing with everything he mentions. I can only repeat Jane's cry of encore, encore! Jonathon - your reference to Phil Collins also hits home. From my own viewpoint, whilst I would very much appreciate a change to the setlist, I know that I shall be there, at several gigs, whatever he chooses to sing and love it, though, I too, would prefer him to be in the studio. Tracy - I phoned Derby yesterday - apparently the gig is not yet confirmed. I was advised to ring back in a week's time. The list I proposed was not personal favourites of mine by far, but just a list I put together comparing the present set list and making an attempt to give Bryan as few excuses as possible not to change the songs more than he has done. I as a fan generally I like what Bryan does, my gripes usually come in when there is some potential to do somthing more/extra or different is missed. I moan usually at what Bryan doesn't do more than what he does J.O'B. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Mar 2004 05:30:25 EST From: JohnOBrien001@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Lack Of Shows Elsewhere. I take the point made by or on behalf of the non Brits and we must sound like spoiled brats over here. One point though is that when Roxy Music played 6 shows in USA last year there was no sense of missing something over here as again it was a carbon copy of the 2001 tour even to the point where Roxy played Do The Strand twice in one show. My point is just that each person has a different set of things they would like to hear and I really believe that if Bryan had his finger on the red button that would blow up the world tomorrow and said he was going to push it unless we as a fan base could agree on a set list, tomorrow we'd all be ashes. So it's best to leave it up to him, as he probably does have the best perspective over the years, though I do think it's okay to rotate a hit out of there occasionally and then rotate it back in next time, but that can really anger the fans, and as you said, 95 percent of them are there to hear the hits -- and among them, they all like different hits, not all of them LITD or More Than This. I could do without anything off Avalon and be very happy, but like you, John, I enjoy, really, everything that's played immensely when it's all said and done. Summary : 1. Sorry for my awful english. 2. We must bow before the evidence : Bryan Ferry is loosing his voice. But, don't worry it doesn't really matter. See below. 3. But nevertheless, by good taste and intelligence (Bryan Ferry's and/or Colin Good's ?), the Franctic Tour appears to be the apology of "lite" occidental music. Point 2. Hear how much warmer is Ferry's voice in Basel, after a long rest without any concert. Compare with the shows in summer and autumn 2002. Or Ferry in Miss World 2003 singing JG without the possibility to warm his voice before with easiest songs. So, the whole set list is first decided with this constraint : the beginning almost "a capella" to warm the voice (untill The thrill of it all), a lot of instrumental breaks during the show (Harp Intro/My one and only love/Ja Nun Hons Pris/Endless final of My Only Love/Tara/Boys and Girls almost spoken). And Chorus singers to support Bryan Ferry for the last part of the show. When I say his loosing his voice, he is only loosing the capacity not the quality : He still vibrates like a "human Stradivarius". Point 3. I find a meaningful signification in the "regular" set list in The Frantic Tour. I understand the first part as a grateful thanks of our musical roots : Classical music with the harp intro from Carlos Salzedo (Isn't it marvellous to begin a rock concert with a so delicate piece), Jazz with Smoke gets... and My one and only love, pionners with Dylan's Don't think twice, Folk with Carrickfergus. The Only face has its right place at the beginning of the show but I won't linger on (because point 1) And then "The thrill of it all", a true roxy song. After the grateful previous songs it sounds like "And then came ROXY !" in the evolution music tree. And we know it's true. Roxy was a new step for the occidental music. It could have been another Roxy typical hits : Virginia Plain/Do the Strand/Remake-Remodel... So I don't understand why in recent shows, The thrill of it all was replaced by I'ts all over... No sense ! The show goes on with fantasies. Ferry tells us : I can do that and that also. For instance, consider Tokyo Joe like the "Rondo a la turc" in Mozart's repertoire. Nothing else but a beautiful fantaisie. A fancy. This part of the show can change from time to time. And that's what Bryan Ferry does. And then of course the greatest hits. I like that tour. Who can else include Rock/Jazz/Classical/ music on a same show and all the different ways to play music : Acoustic and electric guitar, harp, violin, piano, brass, harmonica, drums, electronic sounds. Tell me what kind of instrument is missing ? What kind of emotion music can bring is missing ? And talented and professionnal players, and I guess all the staff aroud him. Bravo Monsieur Ferry. This would be a great idea. TOF is a wonderful song, and obviously he tried MTT solo once, but there would be a chance to let achange slip in without having to work out a big arrangement. I assume there are a couple of numbers he could do solo on the piano (or during the 'acoustic set'), for example: - - When She Walks In The Room - - Chance Meeting - - Mamouna - - Sea Breezes - - Serenade - - Broken Wings - - A Really Good Time - - Spin Me Round - - Crazy Love - - River Of Salt - - One Kiss - - This Island Earth - - Your Painted Smile Probably some of these are too long, or he doesn't want to perform them anymore, there may be reasons galore. If he only did three or four of them, changing one for the other each evening and maybe on the next leg of the tour, bring in one or two other solo tracks, it'd be much more thrilling. Besides, TOF is not a number known all-too-well by the casual concert goer, so here's room to experiment and enjoy. I also second John's (it was yours, wasn't it?) observation of many interesting numbers being dropped all too soon. Broken Wings, Will You Love Me Tomorrow?, Just Like You, Sign Of The Times and some more. JOB is absolutely right: the Frantic tour was, judging from the number of different tracks, the most varied by far. Remember Roxy and BF didn't really change the setlists that much during one tour during the past. As far as I can see, there was little variation during the Manifesto tour, for example. But here, it's a long, long touring schedule, and I frankly would get so bored if I weren't to change what I was playing night by night, even with the music being as great as it is. Even if a rarely performed track were beset by some playing mistakes, I wouldn't mind it. The 'In Concert' version of ASFE (1974), for example, sounds like a giant town hall breaking down at times, but I love it especially for this unique atmosphere. Reassemble the mixture of adventure and routine is the Oblique Strategy I'd construct and suggest here. J.O'B.< My last US show was the 2001 Roxy one -- and believe me, I'd be very happy to hear that great set list all over again here in Texas!! I will say I am not as crazy about this latest set list he's used, not quite as much to my liking, but I'd love every minute of it anyway, just a matter of degree.
