I've listened to a lot of songs by a lot of artists. A few of those artists are The Replacements, Modest Mouse, Death Cab For Cutie, Yo La Tengo, The Ink Spots, Johnny Cash, Beach Boys, Goldfrapp, Frou Frou, Pretenders, Cocteau Twins, Dusty Springfield, Judas Priest, Orbital, Del Shannon, Black Sabbath, Go-Go's, Stevie Wonder, Tool, The Velvet Underground, Mogwai, Pixies, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Daft Punk. Many diverse artists there, both highbrow and lowbrow, old and new, but I like to think that I listen to great and interesting music by talented artists. So, given all that I just want to say which song says the most to me, is the ONE I consider the best out of thousands I have heard. The song that gets the honor of being my favorite is: "SAME OLD SCENE" by Roxy Music . . . I can't really tell about keys, beats, bars, tunings, or any other such musical terminology, but I do know when a song blows me over. It is not often we hear a new song that stops us in our tracks, grabs our attention, and drops our jaws. For me, "Same Old Scene" was one such rare gem of a song. 4 glorious sparkling minutes. Rousing, melancholic, driven. I love it, and by some perverse logic, I don't listen it much in my WinAmp mp3 playlist, feeling the need to "save" it for fear of overplaying it. I'm silly that way! :) Again, for me, it is my desert island song. A one-in-many-thousands! . . All the best, - -Joel __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I'm silly that way! :) "Same Old Scene" is a great song. And you are definitely qualified to name a favorite! I know what you mean about "saving" a song. I have that particular strain of OCD myself. In fact, I haven't played Avalon or Stranded in months because of it. It's like Charlie Bucket with his birthday chocolate bar. I particularly like Andy MacKay's sax work, it just soars into the ether and feels so liberating. Also, the falsetto voices help augment this 'flight' of young loving, providing reinforcement of the song's lyrics (the ups and downs of love, thus life). "Young loving may be so extreme...". I wonder, when Bryan Ferry penned this song did he mean 'young loving' to be, 'the love that young people feel', 'the love that people feel at the beginning of each love affair', or did he mean it was 'a person's "first love"'? Could he have possibly used 'young loving' to encompass all these possibilities? Best wishes. Exactly - good description. > Also, the falsetto > voices help augment this 'flight' of young loving, providing > reinforcement of the song's lyrics (the ups and downs of > love, thus life). "Young loving may be so extreme...". "SAME OLD SCENE"- was written/recorded in Manzanera's studio, yes? No? Another thing about the song I've obsessively noted :) is that the first few seconds of the intro part sounds quite similar to Blondie's "Heart Of Glass" intro. S.O.S. is such a fun song to play "air instruments" to. I think I've become a master of mimicking "air bass" to it! :P . __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Why only the beginning? That would be the lack of interest on both parties. You can have a passionate/stormy relationship well into the middle/end of a relationship (just look at several celebrities, I won't name any names), but it can also happen to ordinary people. My favourite Roxy song is "In every dreamhome a heartache", but it is not my favourite song of all times (which I can't mention, as it would be OT). I asked that ( that is, 'the love that people feel at the beginning of each love affair'), because 'young loving' might occur when love is in its incipiency (undeveloped or just starting) at the beginning of a relationship - the 'falling in love' part of each affair. "You can have a passionate/stormy relationship well into the middle/end of a relationship " Absolutely! And stormy weather is so unsettled that perhaps Ferry's lyric 'young loving' just might encompass weathering relationships, too, given that love is alive. Either the guy's a lyric genius or he's just got 'dumb luck'!!! Best wishes. I put #5 on it, guess what? it came in first, so all you gamblers out there keep an eye on it. KWil632057@aol.com wrote: > 'Next weeks panel will include Brian Eno formerly of Roxy Music' Well spotted. I always enjoy this programme. Those from outside the UK will likely never have seen it (though I get it here in mainland Europe). It's a discussion programme that takes questions from the audience (the questioners and the list decided in advance) and puts them to a panel that includes members of parliament, people from industry and celebrities. It works pretty well even if (or perhaps because) its format, though not quite soundbite TV, can force those on the panel to pander to the audience and say things they probably don't feel to be entirely true. Politicians do this for a living but it's interesting to see the same thing from so many others when they're put on the spot. And it takes a brave panelist to stand up to a holier-than-thou audience, too. Toby Young (anyone remember The Modern Review, which used to proudly list Bryan Ferry among its subscribers?) did this last week. It'll be fascinating to see how Eno gets on. Again, for those outside the UK. Some time after the programme has been broadcast, it should be available online, in RealAudio format, here: The Question Time home page is here: B ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Feb 2004 07:43:36 +0100 From: "Kari Solberg" Subject: [AVALON] Interview link Here's a link to the interview of today http://www.gold90.com.sg/ Kari ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Feb 2004 00:04:10 -0800 (PST) From: Joel Hurd Subject: Re: [AVALON] Interview link - --- Kari Solberg wrote: > Here's a link to the interview of today > > http://www.gold90.com.sg/ Ouch! Kind of painful to listen to. Ferry had to work to carry the interview - the interviewer left a lot to be desired (and Bryan Ferry is now called Bill Ferry?)! But the interview does get a bit better as it goes on. Only a bit though. Ferry on Jealous Guy: "I think I'd get shot if I didn't do it!" Personally, I find that quote from Ferry hilarious on a number of levels! :P . __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
