No. Can You Repeat The Question. Yes: BF is extremely talented, an excellent lyricist. We, as fans, are zealous demanders of his work. True: BF's back catalog is impressive. His 'self penned work' has ebbed since the early Roxy days. He tours more now than ever before. His touring set list is rather static. Many fans are disappointed. Maybe: BF is coasting on past glories, banking daily. BF may not be in touch with the same reality that fans perceive regarding his career path. He may not care about his 'fandom', as long as it supports him. His ability to create new work may be impaired because of a psychological paralysis. He just may care. He might not care. We just don't know. - Bryan Ferry probably doesn't even know, until he 'falls into it'. And he ain't tellin' us what we want to know or hear, so; grin and bear it, be thankful for what we have gotten from him, pray BF is able to bring us new 'gifts' as time goes by, and if he brings nothing new then pity him for he is either lazy or not enabled. __________________ Sometimes I wish Bryan Ferry was a doll. Then we could make him this way one day and that way the next... By Jove! Richard, you've got the answer - let's kidnap the guy and make him do what we will! Neil, start your drill!!! KBP (who volunteers to write lyrics for Mr. Ferry, if he is willing to adapt them to his music. i.e.. 'Not a fish in the sea can swim close to me cause they're scaly and old, my fin's made of gold. It is a time-saving and cost-saving device to keep the setlist the same, don't you think? But even when he plays the "same old songs", he plays them like he loves them each time. In every audience, I think only a relatively small percentage of concertgoers are connoisseurs like us, who religiously attend every concert and really want to see the setlist varied. Then there are the thousands more who came to hear "Love is the Drug", "Avalon", and "Jealous Guy". He has to accommodate them, we can't feel insulted. But I admit it was well worth it to fly to LA when he added Mother of Pearl, Dreamhome Heartaches, and Yannick Etienne. It is of course all of our fond hope that Ferry will feel comfortable taking some time off touring (where the escapism, the travel, the adulation of the crowds and the remuneration present a win-win situation for him) and write some new music. I think he will do this when (and if) he falls in love again and settles down. When he feels rooted again, and wonderful about himself, the creative juices will flow. When he tours in support of new material, as he did with the ATGB tour and again with the Frantic tour, I think his setlist was very creative. "Bittersweet", "Carrickfergus" and "Boys and Girls" were highlights for me. In the meantime, we all have our bootlegs for consolation, my favorites are the ones from the Siren and Manifesto tours, Bryan had fun interacting with the audiences, all sorts of obscure songs were performed live, and we can listen anytime we want. Otis Ferry, 21, will become one of the youngest ever to hold the post after the hunt announced today he would take over from Andrew Vernon in May. Mr Vernon retires after a year's service. Otis Ferry is a passionate follower of field sports and no stranger to controversy. Currently a member of the Middleton Hunt, in Yorkshire, he hit the headlines in August 2002 when he tried to demonstrate outside Mr Blair's constituency home. He was intending to place Countryside Alliance posters on the walls of the building at Sedgefield, Co Durham. He said: "I had seen on the news that pro-hunting protesters had been targeting MPs' homes and thought you couldn't get better than Tony Blair's home." He said he was passionately committed to hunting and was willing to risk jail to defend it. Bryan Ferry's second son, Isaac, was suspended from Eton public school in 2002 after sending an abusive e-mail to an anti-hunting campaigner. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Feb 2004 13:32:42 -0500 From: "Arnold Schulberg" Subject: RE: [AVALON] Re: Repeating Setlists? Well, I take a tiny bit of solace from the two shows in Auckland. Note the inclusion of Don't Stop the Dance, Broken Wings, Casanova, Hard Rain, Kiss and Tell and (is it possible?) one show concluded without "Do The Strand". Don't know if these changes in and of themselves would motivate me to make a 7 1/2 hour drive to see a show, like I did in 2002, but hopeful small signs. Apparently, it's the paperback being published now - the coffee table hardback version has been out for a while, though I hadn't read of it before your note. It sounds very promising. It was or will be published in the US as 'Checkered Past: a Visual Diary of the 60s and 70s', its foreword by none other than Mr Blahnik. I couldn't find it on the US Amazon site but here's the UK ref for the hardback version, which is going for a tenner with free UK delivery if your order tops 25 quid. Bargain. (And no, this is not one of those Amazon commission links.) And here's a vaguely related link to an interview with Bryan's friend from University days Mark Lancaster, who shot This is Tomorrow (a programme about Hamilton and Ferry) a few years back. He notes the book and mentions Ferry in a paragraph quoted below. > Back in Newcastle I put together a slide show for the school, with all > the things I had photographed in New York, and music like that at the > Factory, such as Lesley Gore singing It's My Party, and ending with > the taxi sequence with Moon River playing, because it reminded me, > like all of New York in 1964, of Breakfast at Tiffanys.
