What I really don't understand is what Bryan feels he has to lose by making "more demanding" music. It's pretty clear that he won't sell zillions even by making commercial stuff. If he wanted to do that he should have done so after Boys and Girls. His most successful album since B&G has been ATGB - an unexpected departure from the norm. Even got him singing again and it seems like he's never stopped since. It was quite demanding for some fans - me included to start with - but a lot ended up loving it. Brian Eno has more to contribute I hope - help to get some "edge" back into things. I can't help but feel it is Bryan (and record company?) not the fans who would find new and different music too demanding. He is brilliant, the best, but releasing collections and touring the same show for too long won't do his hard earned cred any good at all. I don't mean this to be horrible but you would have thought recent traumas would have got the creative juices flowing. SO GET SOME NEW MUSIC OUT. I am one who has not warmed to Bowie's recent stuff, preferring Frantic to it. Bob Dylan has not released that many great albums in the last almost 30 years since Blood on the Tracks/Desire, still he does the neverending tour. Yes, he changes the setlist more then Mr Ferry, and yes he is the greatest living American poet and thus a cultural icon in a different way then Mr Ferry. But of the British bands that debuted in thge 70's, Roxy Music and it's various members' solo work have contributed more then any other band that I can think of (Led Zeppelin started in the 60's). Did you ever think you'd still be selling out venues at age 56? I asked Mr Ferry two years ago. He replied: - - I never thought about. I probably thought that I would be on a desert island at the age of 56 (laughter). I don't know something that's happened is that I rediscovered the glory of live performance again. I am very lucky to have success and a kind audience for many years. On the Roxy Tour I was amazed that there were so many young people at the concerts. I think that a time when Mr Ferry is turning 59 he's entiteled to enjoy his autum years. A case in point: the blond singer from ABBA, Agneta Faltskog (that a with an umlaut d actually) is 54 this year and is one of the wealthiest of the foursome according to lists. She has not released an album since 1987 and is now doing a comeback. My question is why? Agneta Faltskog will never do as well as ABBA. I doubt that she will sell more albums in Sweden then the crop of the singer/songwriters that have lately shifted double platinum singing in Swedish. (The albums selling best in Sweden are people singing in Swedish, strange but true.) I guess it's all a question of belief, so I post this link :-) http://www.beliefnet.com/story/76/story_7665_1.html - -- Daniel ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Jan 2004 13:19:49 -0000 From: "Rob Whiteford" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Boring Bryan? No ! - not nearly enough. When he does, Roxy Music, FYP Stranded, B&G, BSB, ATGB , the talent is there for all to hear. When he doesn't - Taxi, Mamouna, Siren, In Your Mind it can sound very AOR to me. I like Frantic as well and the new material gave the tour more interest. I do agree that we're probably a bit spoiled and should be glad we can still see him live. We differ on taste, Mamouna is one of my favorite Roxy/solo albums from any of them. It's one of my favorite albums from the 90's, if I've understood Mr Ferry correctly this is what he calls "more demanding" music. - -- Daniel ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Jan 2004 13:20:47 EST From: DEAGLERR@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Boring Bryan? > Before I went out of town, I asked if there was any info on Mr. Ferry's > early band the Gas Board. > I.E. type of band & what BF did in it. Although shambolic in places, they are no way near as poor as their reputation suggests. Ferry's vocals are underdeveloped especially on 'Thats How Strong My Love is' although their version of The Mar-Keys 'Sack 'O Woe' is surely ripe for another attempt. Think Taxi era Ferry but a bit rougher round the edges and without the overproduction... Although I appreciate the fact that Bryan Ferry owes us, the humble fans nothing, I really do feel that there is a sneering contempt on display towards what have been an incredibly loyal audience over some shockingly barren times. Ferry is well aware of the kind of reaction his more obscure pieces recieve in the live area: Sunset, Bittersweet and Chance Meeting all going down a storm at the ATGB gigs. Indeed I'm sure that (and the oodles of cash) played a huge part in the return of Roxy. Remember the Roxy gigs where he rushed through the songs missing out verses in his haste? I have been a huge fan of Ferry and Roxy for many a year and yes, if you are happy hearing Jealous Guy, Lets Stick Together then thats fine. The recent shows I have attended have been more social occasions with Ferry performing in the background. I cannot help but be disappointed by the fact that this isn't the Ferry I signed to be a fan of. Saying that he'd like to make challenging music is a bit different to performing the same songs in the same order night after night. Yes I suppose we should be grateful that we can go and see him live, but at the expense of new material? What would you honestly rather?
